A phone number was scrawled underneath.<\/p>\n
“Daddy? Are you listening?” Bobby tugged at my sleeve.<\/p>\n
I forced a smile. “Sorry, buddy. Got distracted. Tell me more about your day.”<\/p>\n
As we walked home, Bobby chattered away, but my mind raced. Who sent this? We\u2019d only moved here two weeks ago. And \u201cbaby\u201d? \u201cDarling\u201d? What was happening?<\/p>\n
I pulled out my phone, dialing the number with shaking fingers. Voicemail. I tried again. Each ring felt like a hammer to my chest.<\/p>\n
By the time we got home, I had called a dozen times. Bobby ran inside, shouting, “Mommy! I’m home!”<\/p>\n
I lingered on the porch, staring at that sticker. Seven years of marriage with Jane, and doubt crept in like poison.<\/p>\n
“Aaron?” Jane appeared, wiping her hands on a dishtowel. “Everything okay?”<\/p>\n
Looking at her\u2014same kind eyes, same warm smile\u2014I felt a stranger.<\/p>\n
“We need to talk,” I said.<\/p>\n
Her expression shifted as I showed her the sticker. “What? I don\u2019t understand.”<\/p>\n
“That makes two of us. Care to explain?”<\/p>\n
She shook her head, tears brimming. “I swear, I have no idea what this is about.”<\/p>\n
“Really? Because someone seems to know you well. Is there someone else, Jane?”<\/p>\n
“What? No!” Her eyes filled with tears. “You know me!”<\/p>\n
“Do I?” I interrupted, feeling the weight of my fears. “Because I\u2019m not so sure.”<\/p>\n
The next morning, we headed straight for Bobby’s classroom. As we reached the door, Jane gasped. “SAM??”<\/p>\n
Confused, I turned to see Bobby’s teacher, Samantha, looking shocked.<\/p>\n
“Oh my God! Jane? Is that YOU?!” Samantha exclaimed, hugging Jane tightly.<\/p>\n
I cleared my throat. “Uh, would someone mind filling me in?”<\/p>\n
Jane wiped her eyes. “Aaron, this is Samantha. My best friend from college.”<\/p>\n
Samantha smiled sheepishly. “I\u2019m guessing you got my little message?”<\/p>\n
My heart sank. “You left that sticker on my son\u2019s backpack?”<\/p>\n
Samantha nodded. “Guilty as charged. I thought it’d be a fun way to reconnect.”<\/p>\n
“Fun? Do you have any idea what I’ve been through?”<\/p>\n
Samantha\u2019s face fell. “Oh no. I didn\u2019t think… I\u2019m so sorry.”<\/p>\n
Jane squeezed my hand. “No harm done, right?”<\/p>\n
I wanted to argue but couldn\u2019t. “Right. No harm done,” I said, forcing a smile.<\/p>\n
Later, as we sat on the porch swing, I said, “I\u2019m sorry for doubting you.”<\/p>\n
Jane took my face in her hands. “You have nothing to be sorry for. That sticker would\u2019ve freaked anyone out.”<\/p>\n
