Living in an old trailer wasn\u2019t as bad as it sounded. It was just me and Mom. We\u2019d been on our own since Dad left when I was six. I barely remembered him, and Mom never spoke about him. We didn\u2019t talk about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cAdam, can you grab the mail?\u201d Mom would call from the couch, her legs propped up on a pillow. A car accident years ago had left her with a limp. Still, she worked long shifts at the gas station to keep us afloat.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure, Mom,\u201d I\u2019d reply, grabbing my coat. I didn\u2019t mind the small chores. They made me feel useful.<\/p>\n

After school, I often found ways to occupy myself outside. That day, I was tossing an old soccer ball at bottles I\u2019d set up like bowling pins. Suddenly, a shiny black SUV rolled up beside the trailer. I stared, wondering who would come around here in something so fancy.<\/p>\n

An old man, probably in his 70s or 80s, stepped out, leaning on a cane but sporting a warm smile. He waved. \u201cHey there! Mind if I take a shot?\u201d He pointed at the bottles.<\/p>\n

\u201cUh, sure,\u201d I replied, unsure of what to think.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s make it interesting. If I get a strike, I\u2019ll ask you for a favor, and you can\u2019t say no. If I miss, I\u2019ll give you a hundred bucks. Deal?\u201d<\/p>\n

My eyes widened. A hundred bucks? \u201cDeal!\u201d I said quickly.<\/p>\n

The man picked up the deflated ball and tossed it. The ball rolled straight, knocking every bottle down. My jaw dropped. No way.<\/p>\n

He laughed. \u201cLooks like I won. Now, for that favor.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome fishing with me tomorrow at the old pond.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFishing?\u201d I scratched my head. \u201cSure, I guess. Let me ask my mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled and nodded. \u201cI\u2019ll wait.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hurried inside. Mom was asleep on the couch. I bit my lip, deciding she wouldn\u2019t even know. I tiptoed back outside. \u201cAlright, I\u2019ll go,\u201d I told the old man.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat! We\u2019ll meet tomorrow at dawn.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, he picked me up. We drove to an old pond surrounded by tall grass. It looked abandoned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy here?\u201d I asked as I grabbed the fishing rods.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis place means a lot to me,\u201d he replied softly.<\/p>\n

We cast our lines and sat quietly. After an hour with no bites, I asked, \u201cWhy did you want to come here?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me, sadness in his eyes. \u201cYears ago, I came here with my son. He was about your age. We were poor and never caught a fish.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s your son now?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He fell silent, tears filling his eyes. \u201cHe\u2019s gone. I couldn\u2019t save him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

He shook his head. \u201cI promised myself I\u2019d never feel that helpless again. I worked hard, but I never had another child.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed a hand on his shoulder. \u201cYour son\u2019s watching you from heaven. You just can\u2019t give up.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled through tears. \u201cThank you, Adam.\u201d<\/p>\n

Suddenly, one of our floats dipped. \u201cHey, the float!\u201d I yelled.<\/p>\n

We both grabbed the rod, pulling hard. We lost our balance and tumbled into the pond with a splash. The cold water hit me, and the old man surfaced beside me, laughing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, this is one way to catch a fish!\u201d he cackled.<\/p>\n

Finally, we dragged the rod back to shore, and to our surprise, it had the biggest fish I\u2019d ever seen. The old man jumped up, soaking wet but grinning. \u201cWe did it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, he drove me home. \u201cThank you, Adam. Today meant more to me than you\u2019ll ever know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks for taking me fishing. It was fun,\u201d I replied.<\/p>\n

The next day, a man in a suit knocked on our trailer door. \u201cAdam?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m Mr. Johnson, Mr. Thompson\u2019s assistant. He asked me to deliver this.\u201d He handed me a package.<\/p>\n

Inside was more money than I\u2019d ever seen. \u201cWhat is this for?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s for you and your mother. Enough to move into a proper house and cover her medical care. Your education will be fully funded.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears filled my eyes. \u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Thompson was very moved by you. He sees a lot of his son in you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Months passed. One afternoon, I found a letter addressed to me in familiar handwriting.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re reading this, I\u2019m watching you from heaven,\u201d it began.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe day after we went fishing, I had heart surgery. I didn\u2019t survive, but that\u2019s okay. Meeting you gave me peace. You reminded me there\u2019s still joy in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifteen years later, I stood on the porch of the house I built for Mom, watching her laugh with my kids.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou never gave up, Adam,\u201d she said. \u201cHe\u2019d be proud.\u201d<\/p>\n
