I craved adventure and freedom, but it came at the cost of my mother\u2019s tears. One day, she put my car in her storage unit to punish me for coming home late. I did what any 17-year-old would do: I stole the keys to retrieve my car. But what I found shattered my heart.<\/p>\n
I often dreaded coming home to my mom, Charlotte’s, questions: \u201cWhere were you, Eddie? Why are you late?\u201d I couldn\u2019t understand her constant concern. If only I\u2019d known what was really happening, I would\u2019ve given anything to hear her scold me again.<\/p>\n

Boxes, dozens of them, gift-wrapped and labeled with my name and future dates: \u201c18th birthday,\u201d \u201cGraduation,\u201d \u201cFirst job,\u201d \u201cWedding,\u201d and \u201cBaby Shower?\u201d My stomach dropped. I opened the box for my 18th birthday. Inside was a brown leather jacket\u2014the exact one I\u2019d wanted. How did she know?<\/p>\n

I opened another box, labeled \u201cGraduation.\u201d It was full of letters, all in her handwriting. The truth hit me: Mom was sick. She wasn\u2019t punishing me; she was preparing for a time when she wouldn\u2019t be there to see my milestones.<\/p>\n
I don\u2019t know how long I sat there, crying. When I finally left, I wasn\u2019t the same person. I returned her keys and slipped quietly back into the house. That night, I hugged her tightly. \u201cI love you. You know that, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
She smiled, searching my eyes. \u201cOf course I know that, sweetie. I love you too.\u201d We spent time together, and for the first time in months, we laughed.<\/p>\n
One night on the porch swing, she said, \u201cEddie, there\u2019s something I need to tell you.\u201d I braced myself. \u201cI\u2019m sick, and it\u2019s not getting better.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the following months, we made the most of our time. She told me stories and taught me to cook. Then, the day I dreaded came. Mom slipped away in her sleep, a small smile on her face.<\/p>\n
On my 18th birthday, I opened the box she\u2019d left for me. I put on the leather jacket and read her letter: \u201cIf you\u2019re reading this, I\u2019m not there to celebrate. But I\u2019m with you, always. I\u2019m so proud of the man you\u2019ve become.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been two years, and I still have those boxes. Some days, I think about opening another one but stop myself. I\u2019m saving Mom for later, piece by piece.<\/p>\n
