When I arrived, something felt off. The house was dark, and the front door was closed. I shrugged it off, thinking Frank, my father-in-law, had taken her out. I knocked, then let myself in, calling, \u201cSharon? It\u2019s me, Ruth!\u201d<\/p>\n

Nothing. I texted Frank: \u201cWhere are you guys?\u201d He replied, \u201cOut with the guys. Sharon\u2019s resting. You can head home if you want.\u201d<\/p>\n

That didn\u2019t sit right. I called for Sharon again but heard a faint tapping sound from upstairs. My heart raced as I climbed the stairs to the attic door, which was usually locked. Today, the key was in the lock.<\/p>\n

\u201cSharon?\u201d I whispered. No answer, but the tapping stopped. I hesitated before turning the key and opening the door. There was Sharon, sitting in an old chair, looking worn.<\/p>\n

I rushed over. \u201cSharon, what\u2019s going on? Why are you up here?\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes darted to the door. \u201cI\u2026 Frank locked me in here,\u201d she said, trembling.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat? Why would he do that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI reorganized his man cave while he was out. When he came home, he lost it and locked me in to \u2018think about what I\u2019d done.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

I was shocked. This wasn\u2019t just anger; it was abuse. \u201cSharon, that\u2019s insane! You\u2019re his wife, not a child. We\u2019re leaving.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hesitated. \u201cBut what if he gets angrier?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe doesn\u2019t get to decide how you live your life. You don\u2019t have to tiptoe around him!\u201d<\/p>\n

After a long moment, she nodded. \u201cOkay, let\u2019s go.\u201d<\/p>\n

We packed a small bag, and as soon as we stepped outside, I could see her relax. On the drive home, I asked if she was okay. She gave a small smile but looked exhausted.<\/p>\n

That evening, my phone buzzed. It was Frank, demanding to know where Sharon was. I ignored it. When Bryce came home, I explained everything.<\/p>\n

His face darkened. \u201cWhat the hell?\u201d<\/p>\n

He called Frank, confronting him about locking Sharon away. Frank tried to justify it, but Bryce cut him off, furious.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t lock her up. That\u2019s not how you treat someone!\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, Frank showed up at our door, demanding Sharon come back. I stood firm. \u201cShe\u2019s not coming back, Frank. What you did was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharon appeared, her voice steady. \u201cI\u2019m not coming back, Frank. I\u2019m done being treated like a child.\u201d<\/p>\n

Frank\u2019s disbelief turned to anger as he stormed off. The relief on Sharon\u2019s face was palpable.<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, Sharon filed for divorce and moved into a small apartment. She even started taking that painting class she\u2019d always wanted. Bryce supported her every step of the way.<\/p>\n

In the end, Frank lost more than just Sharon; he lost his son too. But it was his own doing. Sharon was finally free, and that was worth everything.<\/p>\n
