For months, I believed I had struck gold with the neighbor\u2019s kids\u2014two adolescents who spent Sunday mornings cleaning the neighborhood as if campaigning for office. But when I saw one of them stashing something beneath a bush, I realized their \u201cgood deeds\u201d weren\u2019t what they seemed.<\/p>\n
As a woman in my 60s, I\u2019ve witnessed everything in this area, from the wonderful to the horrible. But seeing two kids, just out of middle school, cleaning the sidewalks every Sunday gave me hope for the younger generation.<\/p>\n
Every Sunday morning, I\u2019d sit by my window with a cup of tea, watching them work hard\u2014pushing brooms, dragging garbage bags, and keeping the street clean. It was admirable and reminded me of my own children when they were small.<\/p>\n

Grace giggled. \u201cYep!\u201d<\/p>\n
I leaned on the fence, sighing before laughing with her. \u201cI assumed they were doing community service but were just playing pirates!\u201d<\/p>\n
Grace laughed harder. \u201cI apologize for the confusion! They look like they\u2019re cleaning.\u201d<\/p>\n
I held up the coins I had found. \u201cAnd this? This is the grand prize I collected!\u201d<\/p>\n
Grace\u2019s eyes widened. \u201cOh no, you found their stash!\u201d<\/p>\n

As we stood there, the laughter faded into comfortable silence. Grace asked, \u201cSo, what did you think they were doing?\u201d<\/p>\n
I shrugged and smiled. \u201cHonestly? I thought they were cleaning up as part of community service. I even praised you!\u201d<\/p>\n
Grace shook her head, still giggling. \u201cIn a way, they are. They\u2019re enjoying fresh air with Grandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTrue,\u201d I replied. \u201cBut I must say, you had me going. I thought I was witnessing future city council members at work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Grace winked. \u201cWho knows? Maybe they\u2019re learning responsibility, even if it\u2019s for a few cents.\u201d<\/p>\n
