Just when we thought the drama was over, my in-laws reached out, struggling with the smart home system we had installed. \u201cWe can\u2019t figure out how to use the lights!\u201d Mike\u2019s dad complained.<\/p>\n
The irony wasn\u2019t lost on us. They were enjoying the fruits of our labor, yet couldn\u2019t manage it themselves.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Mike said firmly. \u201cWe\u2019re staying where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n
The experience left us wary of gifts with strings attached. Our relationship with Mike\u2019s parents changed irrevocably.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease, come over for dinner,\u201d Mike\u2019s mom said, missing us and the kids.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Eileen,\u201d I replied. \u201cBut we\u2019re just so hurt. You took away our stability.\u201d<\/p>\n
Without another word, she cut the call.<\/p>\n
As I chopped vegetables for dinner, I felt a mix of sadness and relief. Mike and the kids would be home soon, and we were finally free from emotional manipulation.<\/p>\n
