Suddenly, I heard a faint cry. At first, I ignored it, but then it grew louder. \u201cDaddy! Daddy!\u201d my 3-year-old son\u2019s voice pierced through the sound of running water.<\/p>\n
I quickly turned off the shower, grabbed a towel, and rushed out. My wife was still glued to her iPad, seemingly oblivious.<\/p>\n
“You couldn’t calm him down?” I asked, my voice sharper than intended.<\/p>\n
\u201cI tried three times,\u201d she replied, not looking up.<\/p>\n
Frustrated, I hurried into my son\u2019s room and froze. He sat up in bed, trembling. “Daddy, I made a mess,” he sobbed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just paint,\u201d I reassured him, but my frustration grew when I noticed he had wet himself too. How had my wife not seen this?<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy didn’t Mommy come help you?\u201d I asked softly.<\/p>\n
\u201cMommy didn\u2019t check on me. Nobody checked on me.\u201d<\/p>\n
His innocent words stung. I had assumed she tried, but now I wasn’t so sure.<\/p>\n
I carried him to the bathroom, feeling the weight of the situation sink in. My son had been left alone, scared and crying. I couldn\u2019t shake the image of my wife, absorbed in her screen.<\/p>\n
After bathing him, I returned to the family room. She hadn\u2019t moved and didn\u2019t even look up.<\/p>\n

She shrugged, silent.<\/p>\n
Holding our paint-covered son, I felt like I was on the edge of something bigger. This wasn\u2019t just a bad night; something had to change.<\/p>\n
The next morning, I packed a bag for my son and me. I wasn\u2019t leaving for good, but I needed space. My wife barely reacted.<\/p>\n
At my sister’s place, I called my mother-in-law, needing answers.<\/p>\n

A few days later, she called back. \u201cI spoke to her. It\u2019s depression.\u201d<\/p>\n
That word hit me. I had focused on my frustration without considering deeper issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe\u2019s been struggling,\u201d her mother continued. \u201cThe pressure of motherhood has been overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n
I stood stunned. I had no idea she felt this way. How could I? She never said anything.<\/p>\n

Support. I had been angry, but now I had to think about what my wife was going through.<\/p>\n
While staying with my son, I began to see things differently. Taking care of him was exhausting.<\/p>\n
In the months that followed, things improved. My wife began painting again, slowly reconnecting with her creativity. Her bond with our son healed too.<\/p>\n
