Diane\u2019s mom left her with her aunt and uncle while she traveled through Europe, meeting several men. Diane waited for her mom to come back until she realized the truth when they reunited years later.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom, I want to go with you,\u201d 8-year-old Diane said while her mother, Erika, was grabbing her packed bags.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry, child. I\u2019m going on a business trip. You can\u2019t come with me this time. When I come back, we\u2019ll go to Disneyland together,\u201d Erika said to the little girl.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut where will I stay?\u201d Diane asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re going to stay with your aunt Karina and uncle Roger. Isn\u2019t that exciting? My sister loves you so much,\u201d Erika explained. She drove little Diane to Karina\u2019s house and said goodbye to everyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re going to have so much fun here that when your mom comes back, you won\u2019t want to leave with her,\u201d Uncle Roger told her. Diane had a lot of fun, but days turned into weeks, and her mother would barely call once every few days.<\/p>\n

She promised to return soon with lots of gifts for Diane, but it never happened. Years went by, and Diane got used to living with her uncle and aunt. However, she hoped every day to see her mother return until one phone call.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Diane. I\u2019m staying here because I met a wonderful man, and we\u2019re getting married. Italy is beautiful,\u201d her mother explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cOk, but then I\u2019ll go live with you in Milan, right?\u201d Diane asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not possible right now. You have to finish school. Everything here is different. I think it\u2019s best to plan for you to come here for college. How does that sound?\u201d Erika said. Diane agreed but was disappointed.<\/p>\n
She also wanted to see her mother\u2019s new home and meet her stepfather. A few more years went by, and Diane realized that her mother didn\u2019t want her to come at all. She blocked her mother\u2019s phone calls and told Aunt Karina she was never speaking to that woman again.<\/p>\n
Her aunt and Uncle Roger had become her parents in the most important sense of the word, and nothing would change her mind. But during her senior year in high school, Aunt Karina entered her room with the phone in her hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cSweetheart, it\u2019s your mother. Please, take this call. She really wants to see you,\u201d Aunt Karina explained. Diane agreed reluctantly.<\/p>\n
\u201cHello?\u201d she said after putting the phone to her ear.<\/p>\n
\u201cDarling!\u201d her mother exclaimed. \u201cIt\u2019s been so long. I think it\u2019s time for you to come to Milan! Your stepfather wants to meet you, and we\u2019ll tour colleges. It\u2019s so exciting! Also, you\u2019re going to love Italian boys. They are the cutest and flirtiest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Aunt Karina and Uncle Roger encouraged her to see her mother. \u201cYou never know, Diane. This is your chance to see Europe, and maybe, you can patch things up with your mother,\u201d her aunt said.<\/p>\n
So, Diane packed her bags and left. She wasn\u2019t sure about this trip, as her mother had become a stranger to her. But hopefully, Aunt Karina was right. She couldn\u2019t miss the opportunity to see a European city.<\/p>\n
But she wasn\u2019t expecting her mother to frown as soon as they saw each other. \u201cWhat are you wearing?\u201d Erika asked disdainfully.<\/p>\n
\u201cHello, Mother. What do you mean? I just got off a plane. I wore comfortable clothes,\u201d Diane said, confused.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, that won\u2019t do. You can\u2019t meet my husband looking like that. I\u2019ll give you something when we get to my house,\u201d Erika said.<\/p>\n
Inside the car, her mother talked about her life and didn\u2019t ask Diane anything unless it was to critique something about her. \u201cYou\u2019re fatter than I expected, but that\u2019s fine. We\u2019ll get you on a diet and problem solved,\u201d her mother said, more to herself than to Diane.<\/p>\n
She was forced to wear a fancy dress to have dinner with her stepfather, who was apparently an important businessman in this town and extremely rich. But Diane hated every moment and wished she hadn\u2019t come at all.<\/p>\n
At dinner, her stepfather barely paid her any attention beyond the initial greeting and asking to pass the salt. She was supposedly here to meet him, but this was beyond confusing. The worst part was that her mother acted as the most caring person in the world in front of him.<\/p>\n
\u201cHoney. So, you\u2019ll be staying here from now on, and you\u2019ll have the best time. This city is so much better than our town back home,\u201d Erika said after an hour of this awkward dinner.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat? I thought this was just a visit, and then we would decide on college,\u201d Diane asked, shocked.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat makes no sense. You\u2019re staying here. Your stepfather always wanted to have kids, and since I\u2019m too old now, you\u2019ll have to do,\u201d her mother said nonchalantly. That was the real reason her mother had invited her here.<\/p>\n
But Diane couldn\u2019t take it anymore. \u201cHey, Mom. Can you give me some money for a taxi? I want to explore downtown,\u201d Diane asked. Her mother hesitated, but she was too afraid of looking bad in front of her husband to say no.<\/p>\n
The truth is that Diane didn\u2019t want to go downtown at all. She took a cab straight to the airport and exchanged her return ticket for the most immediate flight home. After several hours, she arrived back at Uncle Roger and Aunt Karina\u2019s house.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat are you doing here, sweetheart?\u201d her aunt asked. Her uncle was equally surprised to see her back.<\/p>\n
\u201cI couldn\u2019t stay there anymore. You guys are my parents. She only wanted to show me off to her husband because she can\u2019t have more kids,\u201d Diane said.<\/p>\n
