Jessy and I have always been close. Since her mom and I got married, we\u2019ve built a bond that feels like I\u2019ve been in her life forever. She\u2019s eight now, with bright blue eyes and a smile that melts hearts. But tonight, something was off.<\/p>\n

Jessy usually loves staying at her dad\u2019s. It\u2019s not far from ours, and she enjoys baking with him. But tonight felt different. Just past 11 p.m., my phone buzzed with her name.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t\u2026 I just need you to come now,\u201d she begged. The call went dead.<\/p>\n

I stood frozen, my mind racing with possibilities. What scared her? Was she hurt? Did her dad get angry? I jumped in the car, my pulse racing, thoughts swirling in my mind.<\/p>\n

Finally, I reached the house. The back door was wide open. I jumped out and called, \u201cJessy!\u201d No answer.<\/p>\n

Inside, I found cake batter splattered everywhere and Jessy standing frozen, shaking, with a whisk in her hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cJessy?\u201d I whispered, crouching down to her level. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she sobbed. \u201cDad\u2019s going to be so mad. You don\u2019t know him like I do\u2026 he\u2019s going to yell.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hugged her tightly. \u201cShh, it\u2019s okay. I\u2019ll take care of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed a hand on Jessy\u2019s shoulder. \u201cHe\u2019s telling the truth. People can change.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jessy hesitated but finally nodded. \u201cOkay, but I don\u2019t want you to yell at me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark promised he wouldn\u2019t. Then he suggested we clean up the mess together.<\/p>\n

As we worked, Jessy slowly relaxed, laughing at Mark\u2019s jokes about the cake explosion.<\/p>\n

Once the kitchen was clean, Mark asked if they could try making the cake again. Jessy agreed, and this time, everything went smoothly.<\/p>\n
