Mark shuffled along the cracked pavement, his worn boots barely making a sound as the busy city buzzed around him. In a city so full of life, Mark was a ghost, unnoticed and unseen.<\/p>\n
He tried to make eye contact with the well-dressed strangers hurrying past, but they studiously ignored him. It was a game of sorts\u2014possibly a challenge. He wondered where he would be if life hadn\u2019t kicked him into the gutter. Would he be a department head? Or maybe even CEO?<\/p>\n
His thoughts were interrupted by a sharp voice. “You’ve got to be kidding me! You think this is my fault?”<\/p>\n
Mark looked up just in time to see a gleaming black Jeep parked too close to an old sedan. The driver, a man in his thirties wearing an expensive suit, was towering over an elderly woman.<\/p>\n
“Because it is, sir,” she said, her voice trembling. “It was you who backed into me.”<\/p>\n
The man scoffed. “You shouldn\u2019t even be allowed on the road at your age!”<\/p>\n
A crowd gathered but no one intervened. Mark felt a tightness in his chest. Before he knew it, he stepped forward. “Hey,” he called out. “That’s enough.”<\/p>\n

The man in the suit turned, sizing Mark up. “Look at yourself! You’re the one who should be begging for something.”<\/p>\n
Mark remained steady. “Apologize to this woman.”<\/p>\n
The man laughed, then stepped closer, sneering. “I am a top manager. How dare you speak to me like this?”<\/p>\n
Mark\u2019s eyes didn\u2019t waver. “I won\u2019t back down.”<\/p>\n
The elderly woman interjected, “Please, there\u2019s no need for this.” She reached into her purse. “Let me buy you something.”<\/p>\n
“Yeah, why don\u2019t you and granny go drink tea together?” the man said before speeding off.<\/p>\n
Mark turned to the elderly woman. “Nothing, ma\u2019am. I couldn\u2019t take anything from you.”<\/p>\n
“You\u2019re a good man,” she said softly before walking away. Mark felt her kindness linger as he turned back to the crowd.<\/p>\n
The next morning, he sat on a park bench, lost in thought when he saw the man in the suit again, but this time he was on his knees.<\/p>\n
“Please forgive me,” the man whispered, panic in his eyes. “I need you to forgive me.”<\/p>\n
“What are you talking about?” Mark replied.<\/p>\n
“That woman you defended… she\u2019s Mrs. Sanders, my boss’s mother. I\u2019m going to be fired if I don\u2019t make this right.”<\/p>\n
A familiar car pulled up, and Mrs. Sanders stepped out. “I see you’ve met David again,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Do you think you can forgive him?” she asked Mark.<\/p>\n
Mark hesitated. Finally, he nodded. “I forgive you.”<\/p>\n
David sighed in relief. Mrs. Sanders smiled. “I\u2019ve been thinking. My company could use someone like you. I can offer you a position\u2014just a cleaning job to start, but a fresh beginning.”<\/p>\n
“Thank you,” Mark said, overwhelmed.<\/p>\n
Two months later, Mark stood in his new office. His cleaning job had been a lifeline, and he was now training for a new role in logistics. The bitterness he once carried began to dissolve. For the first time in years, Mark felt hopeful.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
