Then, last month, my in-laws dropped a bombshell: they wanted our house back to fund a new lakeside cabin.<\/p>\n
What? This had become our home.<\/p>\n
They insisted that although they had gifted it, they still had the right to take it back. The betrayal was overwhelming.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey can\u2019t do this,\u201d Mike fumed, pacing our kitchen. \u201cWe have a letter saying it was a gift!\u201d<\/p>\n
We had that letter, so we decided to fight back and hired a lawyer.<\/p>\n
Weeks passed as we waited for a resolution. I couldn\u2019t just sit back, so I searched for rental options.<\/p>\n
Eventually, the lawyer arrived with bad news.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m afraid there\u2019s not much we can do,\u201d he said. \u201cThe property was never legally transferred into your names. Mike\u2019s parents are the owners.\u201d<\/p>\n
The news was devastating.<\/p>\n
Mike suggested we undo the renovations out of spite.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey used us,\u201d he said. \u201cWe should take everything back.\u201d<\/p>\n
But I couldn\u2019t bear that thought.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re better than that,\u201d I said. \u201cWe\u2019ll find another place.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, we packed and moved into a small apartment closer to the city. It was cramped but felt like a fresh start.<\/p>\n
The kids adjusted well, making new friends and enjoying school activities.<\/p>\n
\u201cI feel like we failed our children,\u201d I told Mike. \u201cThey have to share a room again!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know, but it\u2019s just for now. We\u2019ll move to something better,\u201d he promised.<\/p>\n
Just when we thought the drama was over, my in-laws called, struggling with the smart home system Mike had set up.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can\u2019t figure out the lights or heating! Can you come help us?\u201d Mike\u2019s dad asked.<\/p>\n
The irony wasn\u2019t lost on us.<\/p>\n
Despite their pleas, we refused to go back.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d Mike said. \u201cThe house wasn\u2019t right for us. We\u2019re staying where we are.\u201d<\/p>\n
Our trust was shattered. Living in the apartment wasn\u2019t easy, but we found solace in being free from emotional manipulation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis isn\u2019t forever,\u201d Mike said. \u201cI\u2019ll fix this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Our experience left us wary of gifts with strings attached.<\/p>\n
As for my in-laws, they eventually figured out the smart home system, but the damage was done.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease, come over for dinner,\u201d Mike\u2019s mother said. \u201cWe miss you and the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry, Eileen,\u201d I replied. \u201cBut we\u2019re hurt. You should have known better. You took stability away from us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Without another word, Eileen ended the call.<\/p>\n
