The next morning, I picked up Mike, who I barely knew. As we drove, he asked for a detour. \u201cI\u2019ll direct you. I\u2019ll pay you at the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n
As we arrived at the address, I spotted a young woman waiting on the curb. My stomach twisted. Mike jumped out, greeting her with an energy I hadn\u2019t seen before.<\/p>\n

\u201cFinally, you got rid of your old hag!\u201d she sneered. My anger flared as I realized this was a woman Mike had been cheating with.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow could I let this slide?\u201d I thought. I couldn\u2019t just drive him to the airport after witnessing this.<\/p>\n
The couple\u2019s conversation continued in the backseat, fueling my resolve. I switched on the radio, hoping to drown out their chatter. After a while, Mike noticed we were back where we started.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy are we here?\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n
\u201cDidn\u2019t you ask me to drive you home?\u201d I feigned innocence. Just then, Jane stepped outside, confusion on her face. When she saw Mike with the woman, her expression turned to shock and anger.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d Jane demanded.<\/p>\n
\u201cJane, it\u2019s not what it looks like,\u201d Mike stammered. \u201cNicole is coming on the trip too. Right, Allison?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh really?\u201d Jane’s voice trembled. \u201cIt looks like you\u2019re cheating on me with her!\u201d<\/p>\n
Nicole smirked. \u201cWell, now you know. Mike\u2019s been with me for months.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jane’s eyes blazed. \u201cAfter everything we\u2019ve been through?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJane, I can explain,\u201d Mike pleaded.<\/p>\n
\u201cSave it. Get out of my friend\u2019s car and find your own way out of here,\u201d Jane snapped.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you, Al,\u201d she said, leaning against my window. \u201cFor showing me the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnytime, Jane. You deserve better.\u201d<\/p>\n
She turned to Mike, her tone final. \u201cI want you gone by the end of the day. If you go on your trip, I\u2019ll call the kids to move your things out. You\u2019ll get nothing from me because of your infidelity.\u201d<\/p>\n
As I drove away, Jane waved at me with a sad smile. I hadn\u2019t expected my routine job to turn into a moment of truth for my friend, but I was glad I hadn\u2019t turned a blind eye.<\/p>\n
Now, I\u2019m at my kitchen table, drafting an article about men and cheating\u2014how it often disguises itself under the guise of business trips or family obligations.<\/p>\n
