Ten years later, Nicholas drove to his mother\u2019s house. It stood abandoned, overgrown, and shuttered.<\/p>\n

Doris entered, looking vibrant. \u201cNicholas, what do you want?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted a warm welcome!\u201d he exclaimed.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou abandoned me,\u201d Paige said coldly. \u201cYou expected warmth?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMom? It wasn\u2019t me; it was Donna!\u201d<\/p>\n
Doris replied, \u201cBut you\u2019re here alone. Did the money run out and so did she?\u201d<\/p>\n
Nicholas glanced around the elegant room, feeling envious. \u201cYou\u2019re doing well. I\u2019m struggling\u2026 I thought you could help.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m surprised you have the gall to ask,\u201d Paige said. \u201cYou left us when we needed you. Now we have everything we need.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re nothing to me,\u201d she said but added, \u201cFor Grandma Doris\u2019 sake, I\u2019ll help you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Paige pulled out keys and an envelope with $5,000. \u201cThis is it. Don\u2019t bother coming back.\u201d<\/p>\n
