“Mom, I just can’t get along with Mike! I have my reasons, okay?” Lily would say whenever I tried to talk about her stepfather. After four years of marriage, my sweet, bubbly daughter had grown distant and angry toward Mike.<\/p>\n
“Sweetie, Mike loves you. He\u2019s trying so hard\u2026” I’d plead, but Lily would always snap back, “You don\u2019t understand, Mom!”<\/p>\n

Mike exchanged a look with Lily. “For the father-daughter dance at her school. She asked me to go with her.”<\/p>\n
I couldn\u2019t believe it. After years of rejection, Lily had invited Mike to the dance?<\/p>\n
Lily\u2019s eyes dropped. “I wanted it to be a surprise.”<\/p>\n
I sat down, stunned. “What changed?”<\/p>\n
Lily rushed to me. “I\u2019ve been so blind, Mom. Mike saved me last week when some boys were bullying me. He stepped in like a real dad.”<\/p>\n
Tears welled up in my eyes. Mike put a gentle hand on Lily\u2019s shoulder. “I just want to love you, Lily, if you’ll let me.”<\/p>\n
Lily looked up at him, her voice trembling. “I know that now. I want to try… that’s why I asked you to the dance.”<\/p>\n
Mike smiled brightly. “I’d like that very much,” he said, opening his arms.<\/p>\n
Lily hesitated before throwing herself into his embrace. I watched, heart full, as years of tension melted away in that one hug.<\/p>\n
“Mom, you have to see our dance!” Lily exclaimed.<\/p>\n
I smiled. “I’d love nothing more.”<\/p>\n
