I understand that taking\u2063 away someone\u2019s\u200b driver\u2019s \u2064license also removes\u2062 their freedom, \u200dbut if it\u2019s for\u2062 their safety and\u200c the safety of others, then it shouldn\u2019t even be a debate.
\nAccording to\u2064 the CDC, \u2063in 2020 \u200balmost 48 million individuals aged 65 and\u2064 older\u200c had\u2062 a driver\u2019s license, which is a 68% increase \u2063since 2000. And\u200d as older\u200b folks keep staying healthy, that \u200bnumber will likely keep growing.<\/p>\n
While \u2063seniors aren\u2019t usually \u200dthe ones most likely\u2063 to \u200ccause accidents \u2013 it\u2019s\u2064 mainly those under 40 \u2063\u2013 people over 65 \u200bare more prone to getting into\u200c crashes due to various age-related issues. In 2020, nearly \u20627,500 older adults \u2063lost their lives in \u2064accidents and \u2062around 200,000 were treated in hospitals for injuries.<\/p>\n
Right now \u200cthere isn\u2019t any\u200c federal law saying when certain \u2063age\u2063 groups should stop driving. I don\u2019t\u200d think we need an actual law for this. But\u2062 I do believe we should rethink what happens\u2064 when someone turns 70; they can \u200cstill legally drive according to the law.<\/p>\n

When it comes to renewing licenses, every state has its own rules.<\/p>\n
As per the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety\u2063 data from 2020, \u2062there are currently twenty-one states with shorter\u2062 renewal periods based on how old drivers are. For\u200b instance, \u200dFlorida \u200bhas an eight-year standard renewal period but once drivers hit eighty years \u200bold they must renew \u200cevery six years.\u200c Maine allows drivers under sixty-five to\u200c renew every six years while those over sixty-five have to renew every \u200cfour\u2063 years.<\/p>\n
Aside from renewal periods we \u2063also\u200b need talk \u200babout vision tests and road tests.<\/p>\n
As of now only four states require older drivers take visual acuity tests after reaching a\u200c certain age. The other states either have minimum requirements for all ages without on-site \u2063testing or require\u2062 everyone regardless of age\u2064 take a visual test during their in-person renewal \u200dprocess.<\/p>\n
All states should make sure everyone\u2063 takes\u200d a\u200b visual\u200d acuity test \u2063either during an in-person license renewal or if they can renew online or by mail;\u200c they should submit results from recent eye\u2064 exams instead!<\/p>\n
The most\u2062 concerning part \u200dis that \u200bjust one state requires people above a specific age retake road\u200c tests\u2064 before\u200d renewing licenses! However \u200bthis might change soon as an Illinois legislator wants to\u2063 remove road test requirements for those over seventy-five years old in his state!<\/p>\n
Some\u200c say it\u2019s \u2062unfair\u2064 towards \u200cseniors while\u2064 others argue \u2062that\u2063 people with traffic violations need retesting\u200b more than elderly drivers do!<\/p>\n
Regularly retesting senior drivers can help \u200bspot any problems they may \u200bface while driving so \u2063necessary changes can be \u2064made allowing them stay safe on roads!<\/p>\n
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety\u2064 (IIHS)\u2063 mentions that \u200balthough strength thinking skills \u2062and eyesight may decline with aging getting older \u2062doesn\u2019t mean someone\u200c can\u2019t \u200cdrive safely!
