My husband raised an eyebrow. \u201cWe support you, son. We give you shelter, feed you, clothe you, and educate you\u2026\u201d But no matter what we said, it didn\u2019t seem to get through to him.<\/p>\n
Finally, Alex tossed down his spoon: \u201cIf you want me to do things around here, you\u2019d better pay me!\u201d<\/p>\n
I was on the verge of losing my patience, but my husband stepped in and calmly asked Alex how much he thought his \u201cwork\u201d was worth. Alex named his price, and my husband, giving me a knowing look, agreed to pay him.<\/p>\n
Alex smiled, thinking he\u2019d won, completely unaware that a serious life lesson was on its way.
\nThe next morning, Alex woke up to find an envelope with cash on his nightstand\u2014his \u201cpayment\u201d for washing his plate. He grinned, clearly pleased with himself, and joined us in the kitchen, looking very satisfied. My husband nodded to him and casually said, \u201cGlad you\u2019re up, Alex. \u201cWell,\u201d my husband said, handing him a list, \u201cif you\u2019re being paid for your contributions, then we have some tasks we\u2019d normally do for you, but now you can handle them yourself. That includes washing your own clothes, cleaning your room, taking out the trash, and helping prepare meals.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex\u2019s eyes widened as he scanned the list. \u201cThis is too much! I only wanted to wash my plate!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s the thing,\u201d I said gently, \u201cin a family, everyone pitches in. If you want payment, then the work becomes a job, and you take on more responsibility. Otherwise, we all share the load to make things easier for each other.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut\u2026 but\u2026 I didn\u2019t know it would be like this!\u201d<\/p>\n
My husband shrugged. \u201cIf you want to switch back to sharing household responsibilities without payment, we\u2019re happy to. But if you want to keep earning, then the workload is going to match the deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
Alex thought it over. Later, he sat down with us and said, \u201cI think\u2026 I\u2019d rather just help out than get paid.\u201d He took a deep breath, clearly a bit humbled. \u201cI didn\u2019t realize everything you guys do.\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled, patting his shoulder. \u201cIt\u2019s all part of being a family, Alex. We all do things for each other without expecting anything in return.\u201d<\/p>\n
