He looked like he always did\u2014briefcase in hand, tie loosened, barely giving us a second glance. \u201cHey,\u201d he muttered without really looking at us, then immediately shouted, \u201cMariam! Where\u2019s my dinner?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded, straightening a tie that was almost falling off his neck. \u201cLet\u2019s do this.\u201d<\/p>\n
We took our positions\u2014Josh on the couch with a magazine, and me standing by the door. My heart raced as Dad unlocked the door and walked in.<\/p>\n
He stopped, his eyes wide, taking in the sight of us dressed in his clothes. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on here?\u201d he asked, clearly confused.<\/p>\n

Dad blinked, his eyebrows shooting up. \u201cWait, what are you two doing?\u201d<\/p>\n
I waved him off. \u201cI\u2019m busy. Don\u2019t bother me with questions.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d Josh added. \u201cGo ask Mom. Isn\u2019t that what you always do?\u201d<\/p>\n
Dad stood there, completely stunned, as Josh and I kept up the act. I grabbed the PlayStation controller and started playing, while Josh flipped through the magazine without a care.<\/p>\n
\u201cSeriously, what is this?\u201d Dad\u2019s frustration was starting to show.<\/p>\n
I gave him a sarcastic look. \u201cOh, sorry, were you talking to me? I\u2019m kinda busy here.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a long pause. You could almost see the realization settling in as Dad looked at us. His face softened, and when he finally spoke, his voice was much quieter. \u201cIs this really how you see me?\u201d<\/p>\n
I took a deep breath and dropped the act. \u201cYes, Dad. This is exactly how you\u2019ve been treating us and Mom. You\u2019re always too busy for us, and you treat Mom like she\u2019s just here to serve you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Josh nodded, his voice steady. \u201cShe works just as hard as you do, but she does everything at home too. All you do is complain.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dad\u2019s shoulders slumped, and guilt washed over him. Before he could say anything, Mom walked in. Her eyes widened when she saw us all standing there.<\/p>\n

We sat down at the table, still in shock. Dad emerged from the kitchen with a steaming pot and served us, apologizing with every scoop.<\/p>\n

As we ate together, Dad asked us about school, about our day\u2014things he hadn\u2019t done in years. It felt strange, but in a good way.<\/p>\n
