When my daughter-in-law, Kayla, insisted that I make an \u201celegant\u201d Thanksgiving menu because my traditional dishes were \u201ctoo cheap,\u201d I laughed and agreed. But, behind that smile, I was already preparing a lunch she\u2019d never forget. A supper she wishes she had not asked for.<\/p>\n
Kayla has always rubbed me the wrong way. My son, Arnold, regards her as the ideal wife, but I\u2019ve borne years of her insulting remarks and entitled demands.<\/p>\n
This Thanksgiving, however, she finally pushed me too far, and I decided it was time to correct her without saying anything.
\nMy name is Jasmine, and I\u2019m the type of person who values family unity above all else.<\/p>\n
My son, Arnold, met Kayla at work five years ago. She\u2019s constantly well-dressed, speaks with polished sweetness, and appears to adore her husband. She appears to be an ideal wife.<\/p>\n

I first observed her actual nature at a family meal a few months after their engagement.<\/p>\n
As we sat, Kayla smiled sweetly and remarked, \u201cThis is nice, Jasmine. It\u2019s very, uh, homey.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you,\u201d I smiled, but I could see there was an insult beneath her phony words.<\/p>\n
Later, when Arnold went to get drinks, she leaned over and said, \u201cYou should really consider updating your recipes. These dishes are so outdated.\u201d<\/p>\n
I wanted to retaliate and put her in her place, but I remained silent for Arnold\u2019s sake. However, I didn\u2019t want to ignore her unpleasant attitude. I decided to speak with Arnold about it after supper.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s about Kayla. She\u2026 she\u2019s been a little dismissive toward me lately,\u201d I said carefully. \u201cI don\u2019t want to overstep, but I feel like she\u2019s\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
My son assumed I was making a big deal about it, but I knew I wasn\u2019t.
\nI resolved to keep my head down and maintain a nice relationship with Kayla for Arnold\u2019s sake.<\/p>\n
I hoped that if I respected her and accommodated her requests, she might soften toward me. But I was mistaken. Kayla just saw my acquiescence as an opportunity to push me more.<\/p>\n
Every family supper became an occasion for her to take control.<\/p>\n
The final straw occurred a week before Thanksgiving. Kayla contacted me as I was folding laundry.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, your usual dishes are, uh, fine. But I was thinking we could do something a little more elevated this year. I\u2019ll send you a list of recipes. They\u2019ll make the meal more special.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cKayla,\u201d I began. \u201cThanksgiving is about family and tradition. I\u2019ve been making the same dishes for years because that\u2019s what everyone loves.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSure,\u201d I said through gritted teeth. \u201cSend me the recipes.\u201d<\/p>\n
When her email arrived, I almost dropped my phone. Each recipe contained pricey, uncommon components. Truffle oil, imported cheeses, and organic foods.<\/p>\n
I could tell that sourcing the things would be expensive and time-consuming. As a result, I chose to call her back.<\/p>\n
\u201cI trust you, Jasmine. I\u2019m sure you\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her confidence was annoying. But rather than argue, I smiled to myself.
\nThanksgiving Day arrived, and the home was alive with activity. The smell of roasting turkey, buttery sweet potatoes, and spicy green beans permeated the air.<\/p>\n

She gazed around the table, reveling in the compliments of her fellow guests, before taking her first bite.<\/p>\n
Then it occurred.<\/p>\n
I knew Kayla wasn\u2019t allergic to anything, but I also knew a small secret. She disliked nuts in her food.<\/p>\n
What about the stuffing? Loaded with pecans.<\/p>\n
How about sweet potato casserole? It is topped with a thick candied pecan crust.<\/p>\n
Green beans? Tossed with slivered almonds.<\/p>\n
Even the mashed potatoes were served with a topping of roasted hazelnuts.<\/p>\n
The pi\u00e8ce de r\u00e9sistance? Dessert. Pecan pie. Chocolate chip macadamia nut cookies. Brownies containing walnut pieces.<\/p>\n
Her moment of grandeur had faded to stillness.
\nAnd when it came time for her favorite part of Thanksgiving: desserts, she couldn\u2019t touch anything on the table.<\/p>\n
After dessert, she drew Arnold away, whispering sharply and quickly. She kept glancing at me as she spoke with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell\u2026\u201d He paused, glancing toward Kayla, who was now pretending to help tidy up. \u201cShe thinks the nuts might have been, um, intentional. You know how she feels about them.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMom, the food really was amazing,\u201d he said. \u201cI mean it. I\u2019ll talk to Kayla about this, okay? I think there\u2019s been some sort of a miscommunication.\u201d<\/p>\n
