\u201cIt\u2019s for a business trip out east,\u201d Stephen would say, smoothing his tie with that familiar, reassuring smile. \u201cAnother trip to DC for 8 days,\u201d he\u2019d add, pecking me on the cheek as he grabbed his suitcase.<\/p>\n

At first, I was understanding. But when he started missing every important event, including our anniversary and my birthday, I began to resent the sound of his suitcase wheels. This year, he was going to miss my birthday again. Frustrated, I confronted him. \u201cStephen, you\u2019re seriously going to miss my birthday for another so-called business trip?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked up from packing, a sheepish expression on his face. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, babe. You know I don\u2019t have a choice. It\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n

After calling his boss, I discovered Stephen hadn\u2019t been on any business trips. Following him, I found him at his grandparents\u2019 house, where he met with his mistress. \u201cHow could you lie to me like this?\u201d I choked out. \u201cMary, I\u2019m sorry,\u201d he said, filled with regret.<\/p>\n
