After I became a widow, I dreamed of my son, Andrei, starting a family of his own. For months, he talked about Lidia, the woman he\u2019d fallen in love with in France. I couldn\u2019t wait to meet her.<\/p>\n
Last week, I prepared a lovely dinner. But when they arrived, I was nearly floored\u2014Lidia was a woman my age, wearing a red dress and high heels. Still, I was willing to accept her if they were happy. But then they said this:<\/p>\n
Andrei: \u201cMom, relax. Lidia is moving in to take over everything.\u201d
\nLidia: \u201cYou have a great basement. It\u2019ll be perfect for you now\u2014or maybe you could go stay with your lonely daughter. I\u2019ll need a separate office, and of course, we\u2019re taking the master bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was stunned by her arrogance. I wasn\u2019t dead yet!!! But instead of arguing, I gave up the house without a fight.<\/p>\n

A month later, Lidia called me, furious:
\nLidia: \u201cSO THIS WAS YOUR PLAN?!\u201d<\/p>\n
I calmly replied, \u201cLidia, I\u2019m not sure what you\u2019re talking about. What plan?\u201d<\/p>\n
She practically screeched into the phone. \u201cThe pipes in the master bedroom bathroom burst! Everything is flooded! The walls are ruined, the carpet is soaked, and the smell\u2014oh, the smell! We called a plumber, and he said this has been an issue building up for years. And you didn\u2019t warn us?!\u201d<\/p>\n
I couldn\u2019t help but chuckle under my breath. \u201cOh, dear, I\u2019m so sorry to hear that, Lidia. But, you know, I\u2019ve been asking Andrei for years to fix those pipes. I even set money aside for repairs, but I suppose he had other priorities. Since you\u2019re the lady of the house now, I trust you\u2019ll take care of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
There was a long silence on the other end, and I could practically feel her fuming through the phone.<\/p>\n
Lidia finally snapped, \u201cAnd the basement? Why didn\u2019t you tell us it leaks when it rains? I slipped on the water last night! This house is falling apart!\u201d<\/p>\n
I stayed calm, though I was smiling from ear to ear. \u201cOh, I thought you knew! That\u2019s why I kept my furniture elevated down there. But you insisted on moving me out of my own bedroom, so I assumed you\u2019d take care of everything. Isn\u2019t that what the lady of the house does?\u201d<\/p>\n
She hung up without another word.<\/p>\n
Later, Andrei called, clearly embarrassed. \u201cMom, why didn\u2019t you tell us about all these problems with the house?\u201d<\/p>\n
I couldn\u2019t help but laugh. \u201cAndrei, I did\u2014over the years, I mentioned all of these issues, but you never wanted to address them. And when you brought Lidia home and declared her in charge, I assumed she had everything under control.\u201d<\/p>\n
Andrei sighed. \u201cThe repairs are going to cost a fortune, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell,\u201d I replied, my tone sweet, \u201cmaybe next time you\u2019ll remember to listen to me before making grand declarations about who\u2019s in charge. Oh, and good luck with the basement. It rains tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n
I hung up, feeling a little smug. I\u2019d spent years caring for that house and making it a home. If they thought they could swoop in and take over without understanding what it meant to truly maintain it, they were in for a rude awakening.<\/p>\n
It turns out being \u201cthe lady of the house\u201d isn\u2019t as easy as it looks.<\/p>\n
