My husband, Dan, was late from work again\u2014no surprise there. His job had consumed him over the past few months, and though I tried to be understanding, it was clear we were drifting apart. After three years of marriage, I missed him, I missed us. That evening, I decided to surprise him with his favorite dinner, hoping to remind him that, despite everything, we still had something special.<\/p>\n

While preparing everything, I noticed my phone was down to just 10% battery and remembered I had left my charger at my mom\u2019s place. She lived just ten minutes away, so I decided to drive over, thinking I\u2019d be back before Dan even noticed I was gone.<\/p>\n

When I arrived, the house was quiet. I stepped inside and FROZE\u2014Dan\u2019s shoes were by the door. Then I turned pale as I heard noises coming from the bedroom.<\/p>\n

I ran toward the bedroom, and when I opened the door, I saw Dan kneeling on the floor, holding a toolbox, with my mom sitting on the bed, laughing uncontrollably.<\/p>\n

My heart, which had been pounding with fear and confusion, slowly started to calm down as I realized what was actually happening. Dan looked up at me, startled by my sudden entrance, and said, \u201cOh, hey! What are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood frozen for a moment, trying to process the scene. \u201cWhat am I doing here? What are you doing here? And why didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

My mom, still chuckling, interjected, \u201cHe\u2019s been fixing my bed frame, dear! I mentioned it was creaking last week, and Dan offered to help. I guess I should\u2019ve told you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dan stood up, wiping his hands on his pants. \u201cI wanted to surprise you by getting something off your mom\u2019s to-do list. I figured it was a small thing, and I didn\u2019t want to bother you with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sighed, relief washing over me as the tension drained from my body. \u201cYou could\u2019ve at least let me know. I thought\u2026\u201d I trailed off, feeling embarrassed for where my mind had gone.<\/p>\n

Dan walked over and wrapped his arms around me. \u201cI\u2019m sorry. I didn\u2019t mean to scare you. I just thought this would be a nice thing to do, but maybe I should\u2019ve communicated better.\u201d<\/p>\n

My mom chimed in with a playful grin, \u201cWell, the bed frame isn\u2019t creaking anymore, so I\u2019d say Dan\u2019s earned some brownie points tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

We all laughed, the awkward tension finally breaking. I realized how much I had let my fears and insecurities build up in my mind. Dan\u2019s late nights weren\u2019t some grand betrayal\u2014they were just a result of him trying to manage everything on his plate, including helping my mom.<\/p>\n

That night, we went home, and I finished preparing his favorite dinner. Over the meal, we talked, laughed, and reconnected in a way we hadn\u2019t in months.
