\nI was standing on the porch that morning, staring at a sleek sports car parked in the same place where I\u2019d parked my old, rusty car last night.<\/p>\n

My hands trembled as I held the envelope I\u2019d found with the keys inside.<\/p>\n
\u201cCynthia!\u201d I called, barely able to keep my voice steady. \u201cCynthia, come out here quickly!\u201d<\/p>\n
She came out, wiping her hands on a towel.<\/p>\n
\u201cGregory, what is it?\u201d she yelled. \u201cI burnt the pancakes because of you! You know we\u2019re down to the last bit of mix. What\u2019s this fuss about?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLook!\u201d I said, pointing toward the car. \u201cSomeone replaced our old car with that and left these keys in an envelope. But there\u2019s no note. Just the keys! Who would do this?\u201d<\/p>\n
Before Cynthia could respond, we heard the honk of a car. I turned, and my old car pulled up in front of the house. My breath caught as I saw who stepped out.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s him, Cynthia,\u201d I said, my voice breaking. \u201cHe kept his promise!\u201d<\/p>\n
She smiled knowingly as if she had expected this all along. The young man strode up the path, grinning warmly.<\/p>\n
\u201cGregory, how have you been? It\u2019s been a while, hasn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJack!\u201d I cried, pulling him into a hug. \u201cWhat is all this? Don\u2019t tell me you\u2019re behind this car business!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI had to do it, Gregory,\u201d he said, laughing. \u201cAfter what you did for me, how could I not? Besides,\u201d he added, winking at Cynthia, \u201cshe helped me plan it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cCynthia!\u201d I exclaimed, turning to her. \u201cYou knew about this?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, Jack wouldn\u2019t take no for an answer,\u201d she admitted, scrunching her nose. \u201cHe found me on social media and contacted me there. Honestly, I didn\u2019t think he\u2019d go through with it.\u201d\u201cI couldn\u2019t have pulled it off without her,\u201d Jack chuckled. \u201cThank you so much for the help, Cynthia!\u201d<\/p>\n
I shook my head. \u201cSo this old man was played like a fiddle and didn\u2019t even know it?\u201d<\/p>\n
They both laughed, and Cynthia nudged us inside.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnough talking,\u201d she said. \u201cJack, you\u2019ve come all this way. You\u2019re staying for breakfast.\u201d<\/p>\n
As we sat around the table, Jack began recounting the story Cynthia only partially knew.<\/p>\n
\u201cThree weeks ago,\u201d he said, \u201cI met Gregory at the airport. I was supposed to fly out that day to be with my wife since she was in labor. But I\u2019d booked my ticket for the wrong date and only realized it at check-in.\u201dHe paused, looking at me with gratitude. \u201cThat\u2019s when Gregory stepped in. He offered me his ticket without hesitation. He said, \u2018Boy, your wife needs you more than I need this flight.\u2019 I didn\u2019t know what to say. I was stunned.\u201d<\/p>\n

When we were chatting in the waiting room earlier, you mentioned how your old car was giving you trouble. Before I left, I said, \u2018We swapped tickets today; we\u2019ll swap cars soon.\u2019 You thought I was joking, didn\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n
I laughed. \u201cOf course I did! I didn\u2019t think you\u2019d actually do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jack smiled. \u201cWell, here we are. That car is yours. And before you say no, let me tell you, it\u2019s the least I can do. Because of you, I got to be there when my daughter was born. You gave me a gift I can never repay.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cynthia and I exchanged a look, tears in our eyes. \u201cJack,\u201d I said, \u201cthis is too much. We can\u2019t accept it.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Jack shook his head. \u201cPlease, Gregory. If you say no, it\u2019ll break my heart.\u201d<\/p>\n
How could we refuse?<\/p>\n
Jack\u2019s kindness didn\u2019t end there. He helped us pay off our loans and even repaired the house.<\/p>\n
A few weeks later, he came to visit with his wife and baby. Though we live in different cities, Jack has become like a son to us. He calls often and visits when he can, ensuring we never want for anything.<\/p>\n
