No answer.<\/p>\n
\u201cOkay,\u201d I muttered. \u201cHe\u2019s probably driving. Maybe his phone\u2019s in his pocket.\u201d<\/p>\n
I busied myself with reheating the green beans and straightening the already-perfect table. I tried to ignore the knot forming in my stomach. By 7:30 p.m., I\u2019d called three more times. No answer.<\/p>\n

For a second, I thought I misheard her.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d I said. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s with his wife,\u201d she repeated. \u201cShe\u2019s in labor. He\u2019s helping her through it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The line went dead.<\/p>\n
My phone slipped from my hand and hit the floor. My legs felt like they might give out, and my mind raced.<\/p>\n
His wife? Their baby?<\/p>\n
What was she talking about?<\/p>\n
I couldn\u2019t breathe. My chest felt tight. I stumbled into the living room and sank onto the couch. The lights on the tree blurred as tears filled my eyes.<\/p>\n
