\u201cYou\u2019re kidding me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I were,\u201d she said quietly. \u201cIt\u2019s been this way for generations. The men are tested,\u201d she said, her voice barely above a whisper. \u201cSome d:ie out there. Others\u2026 come back changed. But it\u2019s been done for over a century. Ethan\u2019s known about this his entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes glistened with tears. \u201cHis birthday is in three weeks, Mia. And I\u2019m afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n

The air seemed to thicken between us.<\/p>\n

My husband Ethan was slouched on the couch when I stormed into our home. I stood in the doorway for a moment, my pulse thrumming in my ears.<\/p>\n
