My big business trip to Los Angeles was going to be just another day until the pilot gave me a mysterious request leaving me questioning everything I knew about my past. The truth he shared would alter my future in ways I never imagined.<\/p>\n
My flight was supposed to be a smooth one, but what happened during that two-hour journey changed my life forever. But before I tell you about it, let me share why I had to reach LA that day.<\/p>\n
So, I am an architect at a well-known construction firm, and this is my dream job. Let me tell you, it wasn\u2019t good luck that brought me here. It was my hard work and all those sleepless nights I spent in college upgrading my skills and learning new concepts.<\/p>\n
In recent times, my boss gave me an opportunity to present a big project to some of our top investors in Los Angeles.It was a HUGE thing because it could lead to a long-awaited promotion, so I happily accepted the opportunity.<\/p>\n
Frankly speaking, I felt so grateful because it was also a chance to make my mom, Melissa, proud. She\u2019s my best friend, and that\u2019s mainly because she has raised me as a single parent. She told me my father passed away before I was born, but she never stopped me from chasing my dreams. Mom\u2019s always been there to support me, and I love her for that.<\/p>\n
So, when I told her about the meeting in LA, she hugged me and said, \u201cGo get \u2019em, sweetie! I\u2019ll be praying for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, the pilot wants to speak with you after we land.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe pilot?\u201d I asked. \u201cWhy? Can\u2019t he just talk to me now?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m afraid not,\u201d Bethany replied in a serious tone. \u201cHe wants to talk to you in person. I know you\u2019re in a hurry, but trust me, you\u2019ll want to hear this. You\u2019ll regret it if you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
I sat there, utterly perplexed. The plane touched down. The other passengers began filing out, I steeled myself and waited patiently for the pilot to approach.<\/p>\n

\nThe cabin was finally empty when a tall man with graying hair entered. I instantly recognized him from old photos my mom had shown me. This was Steve, her childhood friend.<\/p>\n
But the man didn\u2019t look happy to see me.<\/p>\n
In fact, he broke out tears as he threw his arms around me in a tight embrace. I stood there, completely bewildered, as he sobbed into my shoulder.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d I asked in a shaky voice. \u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n
He pulled away, and gazed at me with red-rimmed eyes. Then, he gently took my hand and revealed a birthmark on his wrist. It was an exact match to the one on mine.<\/p>\n
\u201cCourtney,\u201d he choked out, \u201cI\u2019m your father.\u201d<\/p>\n

What do you mean, sweetie?\u201d she asked, still trying to hide the truth from me. \u201cMom, please stop!\u201d I rolled my eyes. \u201cI just met Steve on the airplane. He\u2019s here with me. Now please tell me everything. I need answers. He needs answers!\u201d<\/p>\n
After some seconds of silence, Mom finally spoke. Her voice was thick with emotion as she began to explain.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, Courtney, I\u2019m so sorry,\u201d she cried. \u201cWhen we were young, Steve wanted to go to aviation school and become a pilot. But then I got pregnant with you\u2026 and\u2026 and I knew that if he found out, he would give up his dreams to be with us\u2026\u201d \u201cI couldn\u2019t let him do that,\u201d she continued after a pause. \u201cSo, I left without telling him. I thought it was the right thing to do at the time, but I can see now how much it\u2019s hurt all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
Steve\u2019s face crumpled as he listened. \u201cMelissa,\u201d he choked out, \u201cI\u2026 I loved you so much. I would have done anything for you and our child\u2026 Why didn\u2019t you trust me?\u201d \u201cSteve? Oh my\u2026\u201d Mom gasped. \u201cI\u2026 I thought I was protecting you. I was scared. I\u2019m sorry, Steve. I\u2019m so, so sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, all these years, my mom had lied to me about my father\u2019s fate, and now here he was, a complete stranger, pouring his heart out to both of us. I couldn\u2019t process it all. I felt like my head was spinning.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom, this is\u2026 this is a lot to take in,\u201d I stammered. \u201cI\u2019m already late for the big meeting with the investors\u2026 I don\u2019t know how I\u2019ll get to LA now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Steve\u2019s eyes widened as I mentioned the investors.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re going to LA? What\u2019s the meeting about?\u201d<\/p>\n
I quickly explained the details to Steve. I told him how I was supposed to present a major project to secure a big promotion at work.<\/p>\n
