By telling my husband I was pregnant, I felt I was giving him the ideal birthday present, but what I discovered when I got home completely upended my world. I felt like everything was collapsing because of seven luggage, my twins\u2019 perplexing explanation, and an ignored phone.<\/p>\n
I was ecstatic to learn that I was pregnant once more. Over the years, Ryan and I had discussed having another child a few times, but we had chosen to let things happen if they did because of his hectic work schedule and the turmoil of parenting our twins, Jake and Liam, who are seven years old.<\/p>\n
I chose to give him the announcement as a birthday present. It was a simple, ribbon-tied little box with the positive pregnancy test inside.
\n\u201cBoys,\u201d I said, crouching to their eye level on the kitchen table, \u201cthis is a special gift for Daddy. Can you give it to him when he wakes up?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is it, Mom?\u201d Jake asked, his eyes lighting up.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo shaking, no peeking!\u201d I said, laughing as I ruffled his hair. \u201cI\u2019ll be back soon, okay!\u201d<\/p>\n
After kissing them on the forehead, I rushed out the door.<\/p>\n
However, I came to a complete halt when I entered the room later that morning.
\nThe colors of the seven luggage, which were arranged against the wall of the living room, nearly made fun of me. They came in three different sizes: carry-on, small, and large.<\/p>\n
My initial assumption was that our home had been broken into. That didn\u2019t make logic, though.<\/p>\n

Jake shrugged. \u201cI don\u2019t know. But Daddy said you\u2019re bad at presents, so he\u2019s fixing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
I pulled out my phone and called him, but it went straight to voicemail. \u201cRyan,\u201d I said, trying to steady my heartbeat. \u201cWhat\u2019s going on? Call me back.\u201d<\/p>\n
Did he mean to take the boys with him when he left? Was I overly suspicious? It can\u2019t be anything horrible, after all, the lads were excited. Correct? Unless Ryan hadn\u2019t told them everything he had planned.
\nI tried calling him again. Nothing.<\/p>\n
Hours went by. My heart would jump whenever I heard a car outside, only to fall when it wasn\u2019t him. I was in full-blown hysteria and it was dark when the front door finally opened.<\/p>\n
Danielle\u2019s presence to divert the boys was a true boon.<\/p>\n
Ryan walked in, smiling like he didn\u2019t have a care in the world. He was carrying a shopping bag and whistling a cheerful tune from a popular musical.<\/p>\n

For a moment, he just stared at me, confused. Then he burst out laughing.<\/p>\n
\u201cWait, they told you we were leaving you?\u201d he asked, still chuckling as he set the shopping bag down.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not funny, Ryan!\u201d I snapped, my voice cracking. \u201cI\u2019ve been worried sick all day. I couldn\u2019t reach you, and the boys said you didn\u2019t like\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all,\u201d he said, taking my hands, \u201cyour gift wasn\u2019t just a good present; it was the best present. We\u2019re having a baby! That\u2019s incredible, and I couldn\u2019t be happier.\u201d

\u201cI told the boys your gift wasn\u2019t enough because I was joking with them a little,\u201d he admitted, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. \u201cBut the suitcases are really my birthday gift to all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
