It was a regular afternoon at the caf\u00e9 near my office. While my friend and I were enjoying lunch at the counter, a man brushed past us, his hand knocking over my coffee.<\/p>\n

I stunned. \u201cExcuse me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou heard me,\u201d he continued, his voice dripping with condescension. \u201cWomen like you always make a scene over the smallest things. Maybe if you weren\u2019t so self-absorbed, this wouldn\u2019t have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
All eyes on us. My friend looked like she was about to explode, but I placed a hand on her arm, telling her to stay calm. Despite his humiliating words, I made a decision not to argue. I simply picked up my purse, wiped off what I could, and left the caf\u00e9, my cheeks burning with a mix of embarrassment and rage.<\/p>\n
Little did he know, that wasn\u2019t the end of our encounter.
\nThe next day, I arrived at work early. I\u2019m a project manager at my firm, and we were scheduled to interview a new consultant for a critical project. When I walked into the conference room, who did I see sitting at the table, waiting for the interview to begin? None other than the entitled man from the caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood morning, everyone,\u201d I said, my tone professional but firm. \u201cLet\u2019s begin the interview.\u201d<\/p>\n
I introduced myself as the lead on the project he was hoping to join. The other members of the panel didn\u2019t know what had transpired the day before, yet I could see him growing more and more uncomfortable with every question I asked.<\/p>\n
Though I remained fair and objective throughout the interview, I made sure to press him on his ability to work respectfully with a diverse team. By the end, he was visibly sweating.<\/p>\n
After the interview, I stepped out of the room and bumped into him in the hallway.
\nHe stammered, \u201cLook, about yesterday\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
I stopped him. \u201cThere\u2019s no need to explain. Your behavior spoke volumes. We expect a high level of professionalism and respect at this company, and I don\u2019t think this role is the right fit for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next week, the team hired a different consultant\u2014someone qualified, collaborative and respectful. As for the entitled man from the caf\u00e9, I can only hope that he learned a valuable lesson about treating people with respect and kindness.<\/p>\n
