I was finishing a long day at the downtown sporting goods store when I first saw him. Walking under the biting cold, I tugged my coat tighter and headed for the bus stop, dreaming of a hot bath at home.<\/p>\n
On my way, I passed a shawarma stand that had been around for as long as I\u2019d worked at the mall. A homeless man and his dog approached the stand, both looking frozen, tired, and painfully hungry.
\n\u201cAre you going to order something or just stand there?\u201d the vendor barked.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny chance I could get some hot water, sir?\u201d he asked softly.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbsolutely not!\u201d the vendor snapped.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not running a charity.\u201d<\/p>\n
I saw the man\u2019s expression collapse. In that moment, I heard my late grandmother\u2019s voice in my head. Acting on impulse, I stepped forward.<\/p>\n

I managed a quick smile and was about to move on when he fished a scrap of paper from his pocket and pressed it into my hand. \u201cRead it at home,\u201d he said with a strange intensity.<\/p>\n
The message read: Thank you for saving my life. You don\u2019t know this, but you saved it once before. Then there was a date from three years ago and the name \u201cLucy\u2019s Caf\u00e9.\u201d
\nLucy\u2019s Caf\u00e9 had been my favorite lunch location before it closed. At the time, I thought nothing of it. Could the man I\u2019d helped in the caf\u00e9 and the man with the dog be the same person?<\/p>\n
I left work early and returned to the shawarma stand the very next afternoon. In the next day, I found the man and his dog huddled in a nearby alcove.<\/p>\n

He blew off a shaky breath and managed a worn smile. \u201cYou were a bright spot in a dark world,\u201d he said. \u201cI was at rock bottom when you offered me that coffee. It kept me going\u2014enough that I found this dog, Lucky, and decided to stick around a bit longer.\u201d<\/p>\n
I introduced myself properly and asked if I could do more than just buy him the occasional meal. He looked at me surprisingly. \u201cWhy?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause everyone deserves a second chance. Let me help.\u201d<\/p>\n
He shared his story: he was once a truck driver with a wife and young daughter. Then because a catastrophic car incident left him badly injured and saddled with steep medical bills, he lost his job and wife.<\/p>\n
Hearing this, I realized simply handing him a sandwich now and then wouldn\u2019t be enough.<\/p>\n
Within a month, we\u2019d make sure a short-term rental for Victor, and a local warehouse gave him a job where Lucky became the beloved morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Lucy\u2019s, by the shawarma stand, and through everything you\u2019ve done to help me get back on my feet. Please accept this cake\u2014though it\u2019s nothing compared to what you\u2019ve done for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
