One evening, as I tucked her into bed, she whispered, \u201cMommy, don\u2019t trust Daddy.\u201d My heart sank. \u201cWhy would you say that, sweetie?\u201d I asked, brushing her hair back. She shrugged, her lips trembling. \u201cHe\u2019s hiding something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her words haunted me. The next day, I overheard Richard on the phone, his voice tense. \u201cJennifer\u2019s noticing more than I thought. I\u2019m afraid she might tell Marla.\u201d My stomach churned. What was he hiding?<\/p>\n

That night, I confronted him. \u201cRichard, I heard you on the phone. What\u2019s going on? What don\u2019t you want Jennifer to tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked stunned, then sheepish. \u201cMarla, I\u2019m not hiding anything bad. I was planning a surprise birthday party for Jennifer with my brother. I didn\u2019t want her to ruin the surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Relief washed over me, but guilt followed. I\u2019d let my imagination run wild. Richard smiled, squeezing my hand. \u201cWe\u2019re all adjusting. Jennifer\u2019s just protective. We\u2019ll show her she\u2019s safe and loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next morning, as Richard patiently helped Jennifer pick her cereal, I felt a sense of peace. She glanced at me, a small smile forming, as if sensing the tension had lifted. Our family was still finding its way, but we were in it together.<\/p>\n
