\u201cI can\u2019t believe she hasn\u2019t figured it out yet,\u201d Emma said, laughing. \u201cShe\u2019s so busy with the kids. She\u2019s let herself go. She doesn\u2019t even look like a woman anymore, nothing compared to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then they kissed.<\/p>\n
My heart sank. But instead of confronting them right away, I went inside, carried the groceries, and started plotting. The next morning, I made Mark a nice breakfast, kissed him goodbye, and walked next door to Emma\u2019s house.<\/p>\n
\u201cHi, Emma! I was wondering if you could come over tomorrow evening to help me redecorate the living room?\u201d I asked, feigning warmth.<\/p>\n
She agreed, and the next evening, she arrived, dressed to impress. But instead of heading straight to the living room, I gave her a tour of the house.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the dishwasher\u2014you\u2019ll need to load it every night because Mark doesn\u2019t,\u201d I explained. \u201cHere\u2019s the kids\u2019 laundry. Be sure to separate it. They\u2019re picky. Also, here\u2019s their after-school schedule\u2014don\u2019t forget to pick them up on Tuesdays and Thursdays.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her smile faded as I went on, detailing the endless house responsibilities she\u2019d now inherit. When I led her to the kitchen, I said, \u201cMark likes his steak medium-rare, but the kids prefer it well-done.\u201d<\/p>\n
Just as Emma looked like she was about to bolt, Mark walked in and froze. I smiled brightly. \u201cI\u2019m showing Emma how to run the house since you think I\u2019ve let myself go. I figured it\u2019s time to find someone who sees me as a \u2018princess.\u2019 Emma, you\u2019re in charge now. Good luck!\u201d<\/p>\n
Before they could react, there was a knock on the door. It was Emma\u2019s parents, who often babysat my kids. \u201cThanks for raising such a helpful daughter,\u201d I said sweetly, as Emma\u2019s father stared in disbelief.<\/p>\n
Mark tried to shift the blame. \u201cLexie, Emma came onto me!\u201d<\/p>\n
I raised an eyebrow. \u201cSo you\u2019re not responsible for sneaking around with a 25-year-old while insulting your wife?\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma\u2019s mom, confused, asked her daughter to explain, but Emma stammered. Her father, furious, told them both to leave.<\/p>\n
Once they were gone, Mark pleaded, \u201cLexie, please, we\u2019ve been together so long\u2026 you owe me a conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll talk, don\u2019t worry,\u201d I said, pulling the roast chicken from the oven. \u201cMy lawyer will call you tomorrow. But for now, pack your bags and leave.\u201d<\/p>\n
A week later, I heard Emma had dumped Mark. \u201cIt was fun while it lasted, but I didn\u2019t sign up to play mom.\u201d<\/p>\n
Two weeks later, Mark returned, flowers in hand. \u201cPlease, Lexie, I miss you, the kids, our family.\u201d<\/p>\n
