Determined to sit through her father\u2019s birthday dinner, Lara decides to hire a boyfriend for the night. Little did she know that a romantic comedy would play out.<\/p>\n

I love my family, but family gatherings used to be a nightmare for me. Every single time we got together, my sister Emily would find some way or the other to poke fun at my single life.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Last Thanksgiving, she took it too far and even set a place at the table for my \u201cimaginary boyfriend,\u201d complete with a hand-drawn face on a napkin. Everyone around the table laughed while I forced a smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s funny, Lara!\u201d she would say whenever I brought up the incident.<\/p>\n

It was anything but funny.<\/p>\n

Now, my father\u2019s birthday is coming up, and of course, it was to be celebrated with a family dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no way I can sit through another one of those events with my family,\u201d I told my friend, Kate, when we met for coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m telling you now, Emily probably has something up her sleeve already,\u201d I grumbled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen just hire someone out for the night!\u201d Kate chuckled, adding sugar to her coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cHire a man?\u201d I exclaimed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes! My sister did it through an agency. She didn\u2019t want to go to her ex-boyfriend\u2019s wedding by herself, so she found the agency. Look, it\u2019s all above board and the guys do exactly what you need them to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not\u2026 sleazy?\u201d I asked, trying to think of a better word.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Lara,\u201d she giggled. \u201cAnd you know my sister. She\u2019s so prim and proper! She wouldn\u2019t have gone ahead with it if she didn\u2019t think that everything was legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which is how I ended up hiring a date to the family gathering. I found Jake through the same agency that Kate\u2019s sister used. He was charming, easy to talk to, and seemed to understand exactly what I needed.<\/p>\n

We met a few times before the dinner to get our story straight, because the last thing I wanted was Emily to get wind of something fishy.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, the story is that we met at a mutual friend\u2019s party, hit it off over their dog, and have been dating for three months,\u201d Jake said, grinning. \u201cSounds about right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLook, any story involving myself and a dog are winners,\u201d I replied, opening our Chinese takeout for dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m an architect with a passion for cooking, right?\u201d he confirmed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, spot on,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

We had rehearsed the story so many times that I was starting to believe it myself. Although, I did wonder if Jake was actually an architect with a passion for cooking because it was something he had brought up and I just liked the idea.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t need to get to know him too well,\u201d Kate said through the phone as I was doing my makeup on the day of the family dinner. \u201cJust enough to be familiar and comfortable through the night.\u201d<\/p>\n

When we got to my parents\u2019 house, I walked in holding Jake\u2019s hand. My family\u2019s jaw dropped collectively; even my mother raised an eyebrow and smiled at our entrance.<\/p>\n

My sister, on the other hand, was never one to miss an opportunity, and leaned in towards Jake with a smirk.<\/p>\n

\u201cBlink twice if she\u2019s forcing you to be here,\u201d she said. \u201cWe all know how difficult it is to be with Lara. My sympathies to you for having to deal with\u2026 that.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was on the verge of snapping when Jake tightened his grip on my hand, smiling at me as he pulled me closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen,\u201d he said to Emily, his voice calm yet firm. \u201cIs this how you\u2019re going to act all evening? Are you jealous of your sister?\u201d<\/p>\n

Emily\u2019s face turned crimson, but before she could retort, Jake continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause anyone would be lucky to have someone as amazing as her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUm, no, that\u2019s not what I meant,\u201d my sister stammered before heading into the kitchen after my mother.<\/p>\n

Dinner went surprisingly well after that. Jake charmed my parents with stories of his travels and even engaged my notoriously aloof brother, Mark, in a discussion about architecture and how spaces should be about belonging.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never thought about it like that,\u201d Mark said, picking up his wine glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople usually don\u2019t,\u201d Jake replied, taking the roast potatoes that I offered him. \u201cBut it\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re very different from the usual guys that Lara dates,\u201d Emily said. \u201cIt\u2019s like you\u2019re too good to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n

I rolled my eyes at her.<\/p>\n

But Jake?<\/p>\n

Jake deflected Emily\u2019s jabs with such grace and humor that even she had to back down. I found myself watching him, truly watching him, and wondering if any of this could be real.<\/p>\n

The real turning point came with dessert as we sang for my father and lit the candles on his birthday cake.<\/p>\n

Of course, Emily had to make another snide comment, something about how quickly \u201crelationships\u201d can end.<\/p>\n

Jake stood up and raised his glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like to propose a toast,\u201d he said, his eyes meeting mine. \u201cFirstly, to the man of the evening, happy birthday, sir! May this new chapter bring you all the joy you deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n

He paused, letting everyone take a sip of their drink.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019d also like to toast to the most incredible woman I\u2019ve ever met. Lara, you\u2019re intelligent, kind, and you have the most infectious laugh. I can\u2019t stop admiring you, and I haven\u2019t since the moment we met.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jake\u2019s words hit me harder than I expected. I felt tears welling up as I clinked glasses with him. My parents beamed, thinking that this was an authentic relationship.<\/p>\n

Even my sister looked taken aback.<\/p>\n

After the toast, I pulled Jake aside.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you,\u201d I said softly. \u201cYou\u2019re an amazing actor, but I don\u2019t know how I can ever repay you for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jake took my hand, his eyes softening.<\/p>\n

\u201cLara,\u201d he said, matching my tone. \u201cI wasn\u2019t acting, you know. Everything I said was true. I\u2019ve been falling for you since the moment we met.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him, my heart pounding.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we only met because I hired you for this night,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

He shrugged, a small smile playing on his lips.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, life is funny like that, isn\u2019t it?\u201d he said. \u201cSometimes these things happen when we\u2019re not looking for them. I\u2019d like to try things officially. With you, I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded, smiling.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d like that too.\u201d<\/p>\n

We joined the family and sat down to eat large slices of cake.<\/p>\n

Even now, months later, Jake and I are still together and happy. We never quite told the family that I hired Jake. To them, he was the boyfriend who showed up and swept me off my feet. And in a way, that was true.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re telling me that only I know the truth?\u201d Kate asked as we sat in my living room with face masks.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes!\u201d I replied. \u201cJake and I didn\u2019t want to tell my family the truth because you know how Emily is. She\u2019ll have a field day about this. Her pathetic younger sister who couldn\u2019t find herself a boyfriend, so she hired him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you did find a boyfriend,\u201d Kate pointed out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did,\u201d I admitted. \u201cAnd he has also left the agency as well. So, he\u2019s serious about this. That\u2019s new for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, I went home to my parents\u2019 house for tea. For once, I wasn\u2019t dreading being there, because they knew about Jake.<\/p>\n

But it was there that Emily revealed something to me. We were in the kitchen, doing the dishes when my sister turned to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sorry I\u2019ve been so nasty,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I didn\u2019t mean to be so harsh with Jake when he came over for Dad\u2019s birthday. It brought up some stuff for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t tell you this, but I broke up with Paul. He wasn\u2019t away for work during Dad\u2019s birthday. Our engagement has been broken off for months. I\u2019ve been bitter about your happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t understand why my sister carried the burden by herself, but at least she was open to talking to me now.<\/p>\n
