I grabbed my purse, locked the car, and headed inside, hoping for the best. The familiar smell of grilled meat hit me, and Dad\u2019s booming laugh echoed through the house. He was hosting an impromptu BBQ with the guys from his auto repair shop.<\/p>\n

\u201cAmber!\u201d Dad called, flipping a burger in his worn apron. \u201cCome on, join us!\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could respond, the doorbell rang. \u201cThat must be Steve,\u201d Dad said, heading for the door. \u201cYou haven\u2019t met him yet, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve!\u201d Dad boomed, clapping the man on the back. \u201cCome meet my daughter, Amber!\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked up and my heart skipped a beat. Steve was tall, ruggedly handsome, with graying hair and warm, deep eyes. \u201cNice to meet you, Amber,\u201d he said, offering his hand.<\/p>\n

I shook it, feeling a strange flutter in my chest. He was the kind of man who made everyone feel comfortable, a natural listener. But I wasn\u2019t looking for love, not after everything I\u2019d been through. Still, I couldn\u2019t help but feel drawn to him.<\/p>\n

Later, my car wouldn\u2019t start. \u201cLet me take a look,\u201d Steve offered, rolling up his sleeves. Within minutes, my car roared to life. \u201cAll set,\u201d he said with a smile. \u201cHow about dinner to make it even?\u201d<\/p>\n

I hesitated but then agreed. Dinner turned into a whirlwind romance. Six months later, I stood in front of a mirror in my wedding dress, a 39-year-old woman who had long given up on love. But here I was, about to marry Steve.<\/p>\n

The wedding was small and intimate, just close family and friends. As I stood at the altar, looking into Steve’s eyes, I felt an overwhelming calm. \u201cI do,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do,\u201d he said back, his voice thick with emotion. And just like that, we were husband and wife.<\/p>\n

That night, we finally had some alone time in Steve’s house, now ours. I slipped into the bathroom to change into something more comfortable, my heart light. But when I returned, I froze.<\/p>\n

Steve was sitting on the edge of the bed, talking softly to someone\u2014someone who wasn\u2019t there.<\/p>\n

He turned, guilt in his eyes. \u201cI was talking to Stacy. My daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt a weight settle in my chest. He had mentioned his daughter, but I didn\u2019t know about this. \u201cShe died in a car accident, with her mom,\u201d he explained. \u201cSometimes I talk to her. I feel like she\u2019s still here, especially today. I wanted her to see how happy I am.\u201d<\/p>\n

My heart broke for him, but I didn\u2019t feel anger or fear. Just sadness. I sat beside him, my hand finding his. \u201cI get it,\u201d I said softly. \u201cYou\u2019re grieving.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI should\u2019ve told you sooner,\u201d he said, his voice shaky. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to scare you away.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not scaring me away,\u201d I reassured him. \u201cWe all have things that haunt us. But we\u2019re in this together now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steve\u2019s eyes welled up with tears, and I pulled him into a hug, feeling the weight of his grief and love. \u201cMaybe\u2026 maybe we can talk to someone about it,\u201d I suggested. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t have to be just you and Stacy anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded. \u201cI\u2019ve thought about it. I just didn\u2019t know how to start. Thank you for understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pulled back slightly to look him in the eyes. \u201cWe\u2019ll figure it out, Steve. Together.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as I kissed him, I knew we would. Our love wasn\u2019t perfect, but it was real, and that was enough.<\/p>\n
