Shanize was beautiful, walking down the aisle in a gown that made her look like she\u2019d stepped out of a bridal magazine. But as she moved, her steps seemed strange\u2014small and unsteady. I leaned over to Heather, Dave\u2019s sister.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you see that?\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

Heather didn\u2019t seem to notice, brushing it off as nerves. But the way Shanize walked didn\u2019t sit right with me. The closer she got to the altar, the more I became convinced something was wrong. Her dress wasn\u2019t flowing naturally, and her steps appeared labored. I had to know what was going on.<\/p>\n

Ignoring Heather\u2019s warning to let it go, I moved closer. As I lifted the hem of Shanize\u2019s dress, my heart dropped.<\/p>\n

Underneath, I saw men\u2019s shoes\u2014polished, large shoes. A chill ran through me. I knelt down, and what I found next made my stomach turn: fabric of suit pants, hidden beneath the gown. When I looked up, my worst fear was confirmed. This wasn\u2019t Shanize.<\/p>\n

It was a man.<\/p>\n

A man in a wig, disguised as the bride. My mind was reeling, but I couldn\u2019t stop. I looked at Dave, his face frozen in confusion as he mouthed, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man in the dress pulled off the veil and wig with a flourish, revealing short dark hair. The church erupted in murmurs.<\/p>\n

\u201cSurprise,\u201d he said, his voice dripping with satisfaction. \u201cYou didn\u2019t even notice, did you?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dave\u2019s face turned pale. \u201cWhere\u2019s Shanize?\u201d he demanded.<\/p>\n

The air felt thick with tension. I stood, shaking, unable to process what I was hearing. Dave\u2019s best friend had been in on this betrayal? And Shanize, who had left her wedding, was behind this cruel scheme?<\/p>\n

The best man smiled, savoring the moment. \u201cShe wanted you to feel this, Dave. She found out about you and Vanessa.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words hit like a punch to the gut. Vanessa, one of the bridesmaids, had been having an affair with Dave? I glanced at her; she was sitting nearby, unable to meet anyone\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n

Dave was frantic. \u201cNo, that\u2019s not true! I didn\u2019t\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, but it is,\u201d the best man interrupted. \u201cShe wanted you to know what it\u2019s like to be blindsided.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dave\u2019s face twisted in panic. \u201cWhere is she? What did you do to her?\u201d<\/p>\n

The best man\u2019s eyes darkened. \u201cShe\u2019s fine. But this is your punishment. For betraying her. For throwing away everything for a fling.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room was in chaos. Guests murmured, trying to make sense of what had just happened. Some were ready to leave, others still in shock. Dave stood there, broken, his hands trembling.<\/p>\n

He looked at me, desperate. \u201cJanice, please\u2014this isn\u2019t what it looks like!\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head, my heart heavy. \u201cDave\u2026 what have you done?\u201d<\/p>\n
