When my wife, Nina, and I returned from vacation, we expected peace. Instead, we found our home turned into a disaster zone. Beer cans, dirty laundry, and a horrible smell filled the living room. And there, sprawled on our couch like he owned the place, was my older brother, Ted.<\/p>\n

\u201cTed, what the hell? Why are you in my house?\u201d I demanded, trying to contain my anger.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, hey, Jeremy,\u201d he said casually. \u201cMom and Dad figured it\u2019d be easier if I moved in while you were gone. You\u2019ve got space, and you\u2019re barely here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou moved in? Without asking?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, so what? I needed a place, and you\u2019d just say no.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could explode, my phone rang\u2014Mom. Of course.<\/p>\n

\u201cJeremy, don\u2019t be dramatic,\u201d she said. \u201cTed needed a place, and you have extra space. You don\u2019t even have kids yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, he\u2019s 42! He\u2019s been mooching off you for years, and now you\u2019re dumping him on me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStop being selfish,\u201d my father chimed in. \u201cYou have the house, the money, the wife. Family takes care of each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ted snorted from the couch. \u201cIt\u2019s just a house. Why are you making a big deal?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou freeload off Mom and Dad, and now you think I\u2019ll put up with it?\u201d I shot back. \u201cWhy not live with one of your kids and their moms?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I\u2019m family! Mom and Dad warned me you\u2019d act like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I was done. \u201cFine, Ted. Stay. Let\u2019s see how that works.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Nina wasn\u2019t having it. \u201cYou have a week to get him out, or I\u2019ll stay gone,\u201d she warned before leaving for her sister\u2019s place.<\/p>\n

Determined, I made Ted\u2019s life unbearable. First, I disconnected the Wi-Fi\u2014his lifeline. Then, I shut off the hot water, making his long showers unbearable. I stocked the fridge with nothing but tofu and vegetables, knowing he hated healthy food. And every morning at 6 a.m., I blasted music while working out.<\/p>\n

By day five, he was losing it. \u201cJeremy, this is BS. No Wi-Fi, no hot water, no food I like. I can\u2019t stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you\u2019d be grateful,\u201d I said smugly. \u201cYou\u2019re not paying rent or contributing. What\u2019s the problem?\u201d<\/p>\n

Fuming, he grabbed his things. \u201cForget it, I\u2019m going back to Mom and Dad\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n

As he left, I smiled. I cleaned up, restocked proper groceries, and cooked Nina a nice meal. When I called her, she was thrilled. \u201cCome home, honey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, I called my parents. \u201cTed\u2019s gone. He won\u2019t be back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom was livid. \u201cWhere will he go?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s his problem, Mom. He\u2019s 42. If you want to coddle him, fine. But I\u2019m done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ted ended up living in my parents\u2019 garage\u2014on the condition that he got a job. He hated it, and they blamed me, but I didn\u2019t care. Nina and I had our home back, and we were finally at peace.<\/p>\n
