You\u2019d think that bringing home your newborn twins would be one of the most joyous occasions of your life.
\nIt began out that way for me, but it quickly developed into a nightmare!<\/p>\n
After three days in the hospital recovering from a difficult delivery, I was finally discharged and ready to return home with my lovely twin daughters, Ella and Sophie.<\/p>\n
However, at the last minute, I received a hurried phone call that changed everything\u2026<\/p>\n
\u201cHey, baby,\u201d my husband said, his voice clipped. \u201cI am so sorry, but I can\u2019t come pick you guys up as planned.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s my mom,\u201d he interrupted. \u201cShe\u2019s in bad shape. Hectic chest pains. I need to pick her up and take her to that hospital close to her.\u201d<\/p>\n
I clenched my teeth, fighting the temptation to shout because I was so disappointed and irritated, but I said, \u201cFine. I\u2019ll just get a taxi.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the call went dead, my heart fell. I wanted to believe Derek wasn\u2019t heartless, but rather overwhelmed and a mama\u2019s boy. Nonetheless, the disappointment stung. The same mother-in-law (MIL) who insisted on having a separate set of keys to our home so she could assist me with the babies was now unexpectedly ill.<\/p>\n
When we pulled into the driveway, I froze. My suitcases, diaper bags, and even the crib mattress were thrown over the front lawn and at the entrance!<\/p>\n
The key wouldn\u2019t turn. Confused, I tried again. Nothing. Then I noticed it\u2014a folded piece of paper attached to a luggage.<\/p>\n
Get out of here with your little moochers! I know everything. Derek.<\/p>\n

\nI called him right away because I wanted to know the answer. Go straight to voicemail. Again. Voicemail. Panic came in when Sophie\u2019s cries joined Ella\u2019s.<\/p>\n
\u201cMom,\u201d I whispered. My palms shook as I called her number.<\/p>\n
\u201cJenna?\u201d Mom responded on the first ring. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong? Are the twins okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cDerek\u2026 He changed the locks. He threw my stuff outside. Mom, he left this awful note.\u201d<\/p>\n
Minutes felt like hours until she arrived. Mom squinted her eyes and fumed when she saw the mess.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis doesn\u2019t make sense! Derek wouldn\u2019t do this; he loves you and the girls!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI am so sorry, my darling,\u201d she said while hugging me close. \u201cLet\u2019s go to my place until we can get a hold of your husband, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
The next morning, I realized I wanted answers.
\nI drove her car back to the house. My stuff was gone, and the yard was empty. I moved around to the back, gazing through the windows, and then froze.<\/p>\n
Lorraine, Derek\u2019s mother, sat at the dining table sipping tea! When I hammered on the door, she looked up, startled, almost spilling her tea before she noticed me and smirked.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere\u2019s Derek?\u201d I snapped. \u201cWhy did he\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s at the hospital in my city,\u201d she said smoothly. \u201cTaking care of his sick mother.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou lied to him, didn\u2019t you? You faked being sick!\u201d<\/p>\n
She crossed her arms, her smugness increasing.<\/p>\n

Useless,\u201d she admitted unabashedly, finally telling the truth after all these years of being with her son.I could not breathe. This woman had organized everything, lied to her son, tricked him into taking her to the hospital under false pretenses before fleeing, locked me out of my house, and stole his phone, all because she disapproved of my girls!<\/p>\n
I felt sick. \u201cYou\u2019re deranged!\u201d<\/p>\n
I knew my MIL was mean, but I didn\u2019t think she was evil! She never approved of my relationship or marriage to her son, saying Derek deserved someone wealthier and prettier than me.<\/p>\n
When I arrived at the hospital, I found my husband pacing in the waiting room, his eyes filled with concern.
\n\u201cYour mother took your phone,\u201d I said. \u201cShe faked her illness and locked me out of the house!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWait. What? Why would she\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause our daughters aren\u2019t boys,\u201d I said bitterly.<\/p>\n
Without saying anything, he grabbed his keys and marched out, with me close behind. When we returned home, Lorraine was exactly where I had left her, unconcerned.<\/p>\n
\u201cDerek, I was just trying to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ve done enough,\u201d he snapped.<\/p>\n
\u201cDerek, darling\u2026 I just wanted to keep you safe. This isn\u2019t how this was supposed to go,\u201d my MIL replied pleadingly.<\/p>\n
\u201cKeep me safe from my wife and children? Who told you I wanted boys? What makes you think my girls aren\u2019t good enough for me just because of their gender? That\u2019s a problem you have, not me, and if you want sons, I suggest you go make them yourself!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cJenna is my WIFE! Those are my daughters! If you can\u2019t respect them, you\u2019re not part of our lives!\u201d<\/p>\n
Lorraine, for once, was speechless. She stormed upstairs to pack, slamming doors behind her. Derek turned to me, his eyes filled with regret.<\/p>\n
