Yulia Antonovna had long served in the Grigoryev household \u2014 Vladimir and Lyudmila. Today the owners had gone somewhere, and the maid, having finished all her chores around the house, sat down to rest by the window. Suddenly, her attention was drawn to a little boy on the street. Skinny and clad in tattered clothes, he was wandering along the fence of their property.<\/p>\n
\u00abPerhaps he\u2019s hungry,\u00bb sighed Yulia Antonovna, feeling pity for the unfortunate child. Glancing at the huge clock in the living room, she decided that the couple wouldn\u2019t return anytime soon, and stepped out into the yard.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s your name?\u201d she asked softly, addressing the boy who was attentively watching the street. \u201cVasya,\u201d he replied, casting a cautious look at her from beneath his disheveled bangs. \u201cWell then, Vasya, come with me. I\u2019ll feed you some fresh apple pie,\u201d the woman offered, and the boy, without hesitation, followed her. His stomach had been rumbling from hunger for a long time: he hadn\u2019t eaten anything that day.<\/p>\n
In the kitchen, Yulia Antonovna carefully cut an impressive slice of pie with a knife and placed a plate in front of the hungry little one.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, it\u2019s so delicious!\u201d Vasya exclaimed, greedily biting into the soft pastry. \u201cMy mother used to bake a pie just like this once!\u201d \u201cAnd where is your mother?\u201d the woman asked cautiously. The boy froze, stopped chewing, and sadly lowered his eyes. \u201cI\u2019ve been looking for her for a long time\u2026 She disappeared,\u201d he murmured softly. \u201cEat, eat,\u201d Yulia Antonovna gently encouraged him. \u201cYou\u2019ll find your mother, I\u2019m sure you will.\u201d<\/p>\n
At that moment, the front door creaked, and Vladimir and Lyudmila entered the house. The maid flinched upon hearing the footsteps.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd who do we have here as a guest?\u201d Vladimir asked in surprise as he peered into the kitchen. His eyes widened when he saw the boy. \u201cWho did you bring in, Yulia?\u201d he said sternly to the maid. \u201cThis child is looking for his mother; he\u2019s hungry, and I decided to feed him,\u201d the woman replied calmly, shrugging her shoulders.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo now you\u2019re feeding every stray? And our opinion no longer matters to you?\u201d the master of the house protested.<\/p>\n
Hearing these words, Vasya began to cry. \u201cI\u2019m going to leave now,\u201d he mumbled, putting the half-eaten piece of pie back on the plate.<\/p>\n
Then Lyudmila intervened: \u201cWait, boy,\u201d she said softly. \u201cTell me, where are you from? Where did you lose your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n
Lyudmila had always been gentler than her husband. Sometimes Vladimir would scold her for being overly kind, but he had never succeeded in changing her nature.<\/p>\n
\u201cI live with my grandfather, but he\u2019s mean. He\u2019s always scolding me for something, and sometimes he even hits me. I ran away from him,\u201d Vasya confessed and pulled from the pocket of his old, tattered pants a yellowed photograph.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese are my parents. We used to live together,\u201d said the boy, wiping away his tears, and handed the photo to the homeowners.<\/p>\n
Lyudmila, taking the photo in her hands, froze. In the photograph was her daughter, Varya! \u201cLook, Volodya, it\u2019s our girl!\u201d she exclaimed, trembling as she passed the photo to her husband.<\/p>\n
Vladimir reluctantly took the photograph. \u201cVasya, how did you come by this photo?\u201d he asked in surprise.<\/p>\n
\u201cI stole it from my grandfather. On the other side is an address, so I came here. I thought maybe my mother lives here,\u201d the boy answered as he calmed down. \u201cGrandpa always says that my mother is like a cuckoo who abandoned me. But I don\u2019t believe him!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt can\u2019t be! It can\u2019t be!\u201d Lyudmila repeated, recalling how their daughter Varya had once run away with a Gypsy named Manush. For several years they hadn\u2019t heard from her, and then she returned, only to be involved in an accident soon after. That day became a nightmare for them, after which they were left completely alone in these huge mansions.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd where is your father?\u201d Vladimir asked. \u201cAnd my father is gone. He was buried six months ago,\u201d Vasya cried once more.<\/p>\n
The couple was stunned. They had found a grandson! Tired of loneliness, they decided to keep the boy with them.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know, little one, we\u2019ll take you to your room,\u201d said Lyudmila. \u201cAnd will my mother come?\u201d asked Vasya. \u201cYour mother is now with your father,\u201d the woman replied sadly.<\/p>\n
Vasya paled.<\/p>\n
After a while, the couple finalized the adoption documents. The boy\u2019s grandfather did not object upon learning that his grandson could be taken in by affluent people.<\/p>\n
Yulia Antonovna was delighted. Thanks to that day when she met the little one, the homeowners became happy. In time, Vasya was no longer the destitute, hungry stray.
