A simple babysitting job became my worst nightmare when I came home and found the babysitter and my daughter missing! When I shared what happened to them, who was involved, and why, I went into a rage!<\/p>\n
My ex-husband, Daniel, and I divorced two years ago. His mother, Brenda, never liked me, but after the divorce, she became more caring.<\/p>\n
At the beginning of the week of that fateful Friday, my baby girl had come down with a cold.<\/p>\n
Having no other way out, daycare refused to attend to sickly children, and not wanting to reach out to Daniel or his mother, I had Jessica, my regular babysitter, watch her.<\/p>\n
She\u2019d been looking after Lily for months, and I trusted her entirely.<\/p>\n
I looked forward to cheering her up and had even picked up some soup for her on my way home. But the moment I stepped inside, something was strange.<\/p>\n

Still at the airport.<\/p>\n
I pushed through the crowd, scanning faces frantically. And then I saw it!<\/p>\n
The pink backpack!<\/p>\n
And standing beside it\u2014Jessica!<\/p>\n
But she wasn\u2019t alone.
\nLily and Daniel were there. And Brenda!<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat the hell is going on?!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, Charlotte,\u201d she said smoothly, like we were old friends. \u201cNo need to make a scene, dear.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMommy!\u201d she cried.<\/p>\n
She clung to me, her little fingers digging into my jacket. \u201cThey said we were going to the beach.\u201d<\/p>\n
I froze.<\/p>\n

Daniel cut in, his voice cool and dismissive. \u201cWe\u2019re taking her for treatment. You\u2019re overreacting.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTreatment?\u201d I snapped. \u201cShe has a cold!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSun and ocean air will fix her right up,\u201d Brenda said, waving a hand. \u201cWe already booked the resort for two weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n
My stomach twisted!<\/p>\n
Jessica let out a strangled gasp. \u201cWait\u2014what?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou told me she knew. You said she was meeting us here!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou thought you could just take her?!\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel sighed, rubbing his temples. \u201cWe thought she\u2019d be better off with us for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed, short, humorless. \u201cDramatic? A misunderstanding? You lied to a babysitter, packed up my daughter\u2019s things, and bought plane tickets. What do you think this is?!\u201d<\/p>\n
He nodded. \u201cWe just made sure she didn\u2019t question things too much.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brenda, on the other hand, tried one last time. \u201cCharlotte, darling, let\u2019s not be rash, we were only trying to help Lily.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you ever try to \u2018help\u2019 by doing something like this again,\u201d I cut in, my voice sharp, \u201cyou will never see her again!\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessica quickly caught up with me, offering more apologies and asking for a second chance.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you answer any of my calls?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMy phone is in my bag. I didn\u2019t hear it ring. When I got here, Daniel and Brenda were already waiting for us, so I rushed to them instead. I am so sorry, Charlotte. I should\u2019ve known better,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
Understanding my difficult situation, Jessica waved goodbye to Lily, who gave a small smile and waved back apprehensively.<\/p>\n
