She had NO IDEA what was coming.

Emma showed up the next evening. She greeted me with her usual cheerful demeanor.<\/p>\n

Emma\u2019s face grew pale.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd this,\u201d I said, leading her into the kitchen.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is where you\u2019ll prep all the meals. And let me tell you, other than the breakfasts, and different school and work lunches, there are snacks and desserts and it\u2019s all just a lot. Mark likes his steak medium-rare, by the way. The kids will only eat steak if it\u2019s cooked all the way through. The deader the better.\u201dShe gasped.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t expect Mark to say thank you, manners are not his thing. The kids are picky eaters, I\u2019m sorry to say, but you\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cUh, Lexie. I\u2019m not sure\u2026 I don\u2019t think\u2026 I didn\u2019t offer to babysit them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Just then, Mark walked in.
\n\u201cLex, what\u2019s going on?\u201d he asked, his voice tight.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh,\u201d I said brightly. \u201cI probably should have included you in this, too. But I\u2019m just showing Emma how to run the house. Since you think I\u2019ve let myself go, I figured that it\u2019s time for me to prioritize myself. And also, maybe it\u2019s time for me to find someone who sees me as his princess. Emma, you\u2019ll be taking over everything I do. Good luck!\u201d<\/p>\n
There was a knock on the door.
\nI opened it to reveal Emma\u2019s parents. The same couple who often babysat my kids if I was in a bind.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh! It smells delicious! I told Annie that you were going to make your roast chicken, Lexie,\u201d Emma\u2019s father said, joyfully.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks for coming, Anne and Howard. And thank you for raising such a helpful daughter,\u201d I said. \u201cShe and Mark have grown so close that I thought it was time to make her part of the family.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWait, what?\u201d Anne asked.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m leaving and Emma\u2019s going to take care of everything now! You must be so proud of your little girl.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma\u2019s mom looked confused. Meanwhile, her dad livid.<\/p>\n
\u201cEmma. Tell me that this isn\u2019t true. Tell me that this isn\u2019t what I think it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not what it looks like!\u201d Emma stammered.<\/p>\n
\u201cLexie, this isn\u2019t fair! Emma came to me! She came onto me!\u201d, Mark said.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, did she?\u201d I asked, raising an eyebrow. \u201cSo, you\u2019re saying that you\u2019re not responsible for sneaking around with a 25-year-old while insulting your wife?\u201d<\/p>\n
Howard cut him off.<\/p>\n
\u201cMark, this is on you. Emma, this is equally on you. Let\u2019s leave. Now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere will I go?\u201d he asked pathetically. \u201cMy family lives in a different state.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t really care, Mark,\u201d I said, taking the chicken out of the oven. \u201cGo to a motel. Go to a friend. Join the circus.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd the kids? Where are the kids?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re with my sister. And they\u2019ll stay there until you sort your nonsense out. You can tell them the truth after the lawyers work out a settlement. I\u2019m not going down without a fight, Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n
A week later, I heard through the grapevine that Emma had dumped Mark. Two weeks later, Mark came back.
\n\u201cI\u2019ve been so miserable without you,\u201d Mark said, practically begging. \u201cPlease, let me come back. Please, Lexie. We can fix this. I miss my kids. I miss our family.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t care, Mark!\u201d I blurted out. \u201cI truly don\u2019t care. Now, if you don\u2019t have anything productive to do here, then leave. The kids are at a playdate, and I\u2019m only fetching them in a few hours.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then, I closed the door, leaving him speechless.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s been months since that night, and I\u2019ve never been happier. I\u2019ve rediscovered pieces of myself I thought were long gone. I\u2019ve started taking up salsa dancing, and with that, my confidence, joy and freedom came flooding in.<\/p>\n
