I have been married to my wonderful husband, Greg, for over 20 years. He has a son, Tyler, from his first marriage, and we\u2019ve always tried to be supportive in his life. When he married Brittany, we welcomed her with open arms. We never wanted to be the kind of in-laws who meddled or made things difficult. Instead, we always tried to help\u2014offering advice when asked, babysitting when needed, and generally being there for them. But what happened last weekend? That was something else entirely.<\/p>\n
Tyler and Brittany invited us over for a barbecue. It sounded like a nice way to spend the weekend\u2014good food, good company, and a chance to see the grandkids. We arrived right on time, only to find that the party was already over. Empty plates and cups were strewn about the backyard, the grill was cooling down, and the last few guests were grabbing their bags, laughing as they walked toward their cars.<\/p>\n
Before we could even process what was happening, Tyler clapped his hands together. \u201cAlright, so we\u2019re all heading out for the night. You guys can stay and watch the kids. Oh, and the guests\u2019 kids too.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Greg, my stomach dropping. This wasn\u2019t a misunderstanding. This wasn\u2019t a last-minute emergency. They had planned this. They had tricked us into coming under the pretense of a barbecue, only to shove us into unpaid babysitting duty. And not just for our grandkids, but for their friends\u2019 children, too!<\/p>\n
I opened my mouth to protest, but before I could get a word in, Tyler and Brittany were already grabbing their things. \u201cThanks so much! We won\u2019t be too late!\u201d Brittany called out as they rushed out the door.<\/p>\n
Greg shut the door behind them and turned to me. \u201cThat was ridiculous,\u201d he muttered. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t just silently accept this.\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded, feeling my blood boil. We had spent years helping them out, giving them our time and love, only to be deceived like this? No, this wouldn\u2019t stand. And then, an idea struck me\u2014one that made me smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, they\u2019re about to learn a lesson they won\u2019t forget,\u201d I told Greg.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to give them a taste of their own medicine.\u201d<\/p>\n
We took care of the kids that night\u2014because, of course, we wouldn\u2019t let innocent children suffer for their parents\u2019 misdeeds. But we made sure to keep track of every chaotic moment. The spilled juice, the screaming toddler, the endless demands for snacks and bedtime stories.<\/p>\n
When Tyler and Brittany finally came home around midnight, all smiles and slightly tipsy from their night out, we didn\u2019t say a word. We just gathered our things, wished them a good night, and left.<\/p>\n
That was phase one.<\/p>\n
Phase two came the following weekend.<\/p>\n
We called them up early Saturday morning. \u201cWe have a last-minute favor to ask,\u201d I told Brittany sweetly. \u201cGreg and I have an event to go to, and we need someone to watch the kids. It would really mean a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
There was a pause on the other end. \u201cUh, well, we\u2019re kind of busy today\u2014\u201d Brittany started.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, it\u2019ll just be a few hours,\u201d I cut in. \u201cYou know, the way you guys needed us last weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n
I could practically hear her gritting her teeth through the phone. \u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n
I grinned as I hung up.<\/p>\n
But we didn\u2019t bring over our grandkids. Oh no. We called up a couple of our friends who also had young children and explained the situation. They were all too happy to be part of our little plan.<\/p>\n
At noon, we showed up at Tyler and Brittany\u2019s house with six kids in tow.<\/p>\n
Tyler opened the door, rubbing his eyes as if he had just woken up. \u201cWait\u2014what is this?\u201d he asked, eyes widening at the small army of children standing behind us.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, just some kids from our friends, you know, like last weekend!\u201d I said brightly. \u201cThey really needed a night out, so we thought you wouldn\u2019t mind helping.\u201d<\/p>\n
Brittany appeared behind him, her mouth dropping open. \u201cMom, you didn\u2019t say there would be\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, come on,\u201d I interrupted. \u201cYou two are so great with kids! Just like we were last weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greg and I didn\u2019t even give them time to argue. We handed them a list of instructions\u2014just as they had done to us\u2014and left with the biggest, most satisfied smiles on our faces.<\/p>\n
We went out, had a lovely dinner, and enjoyed our evening, knowing full well the kind of chaos they were dealing with back at home. We even made sure to text a few times to check in.<\/p>\n
\u201cHow\u2019s it going?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
Of course, they didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n
When we returned later that night, their house was a disaster. Toys were everywhere, and Brittany looked like she had just run a marathon. Tyler had a toddler clinging to his leg, his face drained of all color.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow,\u201d I said, standing in the doorway with a satisfied smile, \u201chow was your night?\u201d<\/p>\n
Tyler looked up at us, exhausted. \u201cPoint taken,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n
Brittany sighed. \u201cWe\u2019re sorry,\u201d she said. \u201cWe shouldn\u2019t have tricked you into babysitting. It was selfish, and we really underestimated how hard it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
I crossed my arms. \u201cThat\u2019s right. Babysitting isn\u2019t something you just dump on people without asking. If you need help, you ask, and you respect the answer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greg nodded. \u201cAnd that was the last time you pulled something like that, right?\u201d<\/p>\n
They both nodded rapidly.<\/p>\n
