Before our honeymoon, my husband, Mark, and I treated both families to a luxurious Bora Bora trip. We booked spacious overwater bungalows for everyone. My parents were so grateful for that! While we took the only available 4,000 sq. ft. villa \u2014 a dream place with a sauna, outdoor tub, pool, and ocean slide.<\/p>\n
Within 24 hours, chaos erupted. At dinner, my cousin mentioned our ocean slide. My in-laws overheard, saw pictures of our villa, and lost it.<\/p>\n
MIL (gasping): \u201cWait\u2026 THIS is your place?!\u201d FIL (fuming): \u201cAnd we\u2019re stuck in a bungalow?!\u201d Then came the demand.<\/p>\n
MIL (dramatic sigh): \u201cWe\u2019re the elders! We shouldn\u2019t live like peasants while our children enjoy luxury!\u201d<\/p>\n
Peasants? In Bora Bora? I calmly explained there was only one villa, and giving it to them would be unfair to my parents.<\/p>\n
MIL: \u201cIf your parents wanna live like peasants, then it\u2019s their problem!\u201d<\/p>\n
This made me sick. Mark looked shocked. He looked at me and nodded, giving me the green light to act. The next morning, they yelled at the phone: \u201cHOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO US?!\u201d<\/p>\n
I took a deep breath and responded calmly. \u201cHow dare I do what? Treat you to a five-star resort? Give you an all-expenses-paid trip? Show generosity, even when you clearly don\u2019t appreciate it?\u201d<\/p>\n
That shut them up for a moment. Then MIL shrieked, \u201cYou knew we would want the villa! You\u2019re selfish for keeping it!\u201d<\/p>\n
I refused to engage in a shouting match and simply replied, \u201cWe are on our honeymoon. You are our guests. If this is so unacceptable, feel free to check into another resort at your own expense.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark stepped in, his voice firm. \u201cMom, Dad, we love you, but this entitlement has to stop. You\u2019re acting like we owe you something when we\u2019ve already done so much. Be grateful, or don\u2019t be here.\u201d<\/p>\n
They sputtered in protest, but I hung up before they could continue their tantrum. They didn\u2019t talk to us for the rest of the day. The next morning, they tried the guilt trip route.<\/p>\n

MIL: \u201cI can\u2019t believe my own son would treat me like this! I carried you for nine months! I sacrificed for you! And now you cast us aside like trash?!\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark sighed. \u201cMom, you\u2019re in a luxury bungalow in Bora Bora. Stop acting like you\u2019re in a shack. If you can\u2019t enjoy yourself, that\u2019s on you.\u201d<\/p>\n
FIL grumbled, \u201cThis is how you repay us for raising you.\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled sweetly. \u201cOh, we can make it up to you. Would you like us to cancel your bungalow and book you a tent on the beach instead?\u201d<\/p>\n
That shut them up fast.<\/p>\n
By day three, they finally seemed to accept their fate. But that didn\u2019t mean they were done with the drama.<\/p>\n
On the fourth day, we woke up to find my MIL and FIL sitting in our villa\u2019s private pool area, sipping drinks as if they owned the place. I was stunned. They had somehow convinced hotel staff to let them in.<\/p>\n
Mark was furious. \u201cWhat are you doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n
MIL shrugged. \u201cWe figured since you were out last night, you wouldn\u2019t mind if we enjoyed it for a bit.\u201d<\/p>\n
I crossed my arms. \u201cSo you just\u2026 invited yourselves in? Without asking?\u201d<\/p>\n
FIL smirked. \u201cIt\u2019s just for a little while. You have this whole place, and we barely have anything!\u201d<\/p>\n
That was it. I walked to the front desk and had them immediately remove my in-laws from our villa access list. I also informed them that if they tried sneaking in again, they\u2019d be downgraded to a standard hotel room.<\/p>\n
When MIL found out, she wailed. \u201cYou\u2019re treating us like criminals!\u201d<\/p>\n
I deadpanned. \u201cWell, you did break into our villa.\u201d<\/p>\n
From then on, they stayed in their bungalow, sulking. The trip continued peacefully\u2014for us at least\u2014while they stewed in their own bitterness.<\/p>\n
On the last day, my FIL mumbled, \u201cThis could\u2019ve been a nice trip if you weren\u2019t so stubborn.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark laughed. \u201cNo, Dad. This could\u2019ve been a nice trip if you had been grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Moral of the story? Entitlement ruins everything. Gratitude makes life better.<\/p>\n
We all have choices: to appreciate what we have or to be miserable chasing what isn\u2019t ours. My in-laws chose misery. But Mark and I? We chose happiness.<\/p>\n
