To be honest, I never imagined a beat-up old automobile would become the center of family drama, but here we are.
\nIt all began when my older sister, Jessica, offered to \u201cgift\u201d me her old automobile. Well, \u201cgift\u201d may be stretching it a little considering she sold it to me for a symbolic sum.<\/p>\n
The car was in horrible condition. I mean, the tires were flat, there was rust beneath the hood, and the paint was almost flaking. It had been languishing in our parents\u2019 garage for years, collecting layers of dust.<\/p>\n
But, as a 22-year-old automobile aficionado, I saw opportunity where others saw a junkyard candidate.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s something there, Gabi,\u201d I informed my girlfriend as we sat at a fast-food restaurant. \u201cI know it doesn\u2019t look like a wonderful opportunity, but it is. \u201cI can do a lot with the car.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFine, Dustin,\u201d she giggled as she ate her fries. \u201cYou do whatever you have to. But don\u2019t get your hopes up until Jessica actually hands it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessica made a big show of handing me the keys. She made it appear that she was doing me a tremendous favor.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t take this lightly, Dustin,\u201d she advised. \u201cI loved this car.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her comments sounded like notifications. To be fair, she probably assumed I\u2019d scrap it for parts and let it decay. But I had different plans.<\/p>\n
I invested all of my savings into that car, updating whatever I could. Weekends were spent crouched over the automobile, listening to Gabi tell stories about her university classmates and instructors.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do think that Ben is going to get caught for stealing,\u201d she told me. \u201cLike, he practically copied the entire project off the internet. I am confident they will fail him for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
I chuckled while working.<\/p>\n

\nI restored the interior, repainted the outside, installed new tires and wheels, and even added a sound system. Overall, I believe I spent roughly $5,000 and countless hours bringing the automobile back to life.<\/p>\n
Then, one morning, as I was preparing to leave for university, Jessica barged into the house, looking agitated. Gabi was about to exit the bathroom when she noticed Jessica running to our bedroom, clutching her towel firmly.<\/p>\n
\u201cDustin, I need to take the car back,\u201d she told me. \u201cWhere are the keys?\u201d \u201cI need it right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was stunned.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d I exclaimed.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow!\u201d she said, glancing about the living room as if attempting to summon the keys.<\/p>\n
Jessica, what are you talking about? \u201cYou sold me that car,\u201d I responded, trying to remain calm. \u201cIt is not yours anymore. So, you don\u2019t get to make any choices.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, I never officially transferred the documents,\u201d she admitted, waving her hands dismissively. \u201cAnd, anyhow, Tom\u2019s automobile broke down, so we need another vehicle. So I\u2019m taking it back.<\/p>\n
I could not believe my ears. Her husband, Tom, was infamous for reckless driving and automobile destruction. It was his \u2018thing.\u2019 In the six years Tom and Jessica had been married, he had gone through four cars.<\/p>\n
The thought of him driving my restored car was infuriating. What captivated me was Jessica\u2019s chutzpah. The car was mine. Jessica had no legal basis for it. I had purchased and paid for it. Even if we hadn\u2019t finalized the papers, it needed to stand.<\/p>\n
Right?<\/p>\n
Our parents, who had accompanied her, naturally supported her.<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t sure what else to do. Or how to feel. My parents had seen how much work I had put into the car, yet they still wanted me to hand it off to Jessica.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlright, Jessica,\u201d I said, forcing a smile. \u201cYou can take the car. I really hope it serves you well.\u201d<\/p>\n
She seemed astonished by my cooperation but did not question it.<\/p>\n
Don\u2019t get me wrong, I wanted to phone the cops and report that my car had been taken, but I had to play it safe.<\/p>\n
Gabi remarked, \u201cBabe,\u201d as we sat on the couch that evening and talked about everything after Jessica and my parents had departed. \u201cYou\u2019re forgetting something.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat?\u201d I asked, feeling slightly defeated. I had told Gabi that I was convinced Jessica was up to something. Tom would never drive such an old car, even if I had done it up.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou placed a GPS and camera in the car. If you think that your sister is lying to you, access it. See where it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
What I found was surprising.
\nJessica was seen driving erratically, rushing through homes, and having dubious chats with Tom about flipping the automobile for profit.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook, I know you detest it, but Dustin accomplished a lot. It\u2019ll be worth a lot. We can spend the money on something else. The kids have asked for a jungle gym in the backyard. \u201cThis could pay for that,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

\nThe lawyer assisted me in drafting a formal letter to Jessica that detailed the expenses and potential legal ramifications of her behavior. I also gave information on the documented evidence.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can sort this out, Dustin,\u201d the lawyer remarked. \u201cYour sister is just trying to take you along for a ride.\u201d<\/p>\n
A few days later, she burst into my house, holding the letter and looking angry and panicked.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat the hell is this, Dustin?\u201d she insisted.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s simple, Jess,\u201d I explained quietly. \u201cEither you transfer the car\u2019s title to me or I take it to court. And if it comes to that, I\u2019ll make sure the family is aware of what you\u2019ve been doing. \u201cA jungle gym, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n
She was outraged, but she saw I had her cornered. After a tense silence, she agreed to sign the required forms. To ensure that there were no more surprises, I had her sign an agreement declaring that the automobile and all of its enhancements were now mine, and she could make no more claims.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t believe you went to a lawyer, Dustin,\u201d Jessica stated as she poured herself a drink of water.<\/p>\n
\u201cYeah,\u201d I replied, sitting back on the couch. \u201cYou forced my hand, Jess.\u201d<\/p>\n
