The house used to be my sanctuary\u2014clean, organized, peaceful. That was before my husband, Jake, decided to extend a very generous (and very unsolicited) invitation to his best friend, Alex. With zero input from me, he told Alex he could move in while his house underwent renovations.<\/p>\n
From the moment Alex arrived, duffel bag slung over one shoulder and video games in hand, everything shifted. Our previously quiet home turned into a bachelor pad overnight. I tried to be understanding. Really, I did. Jake was apologetic at first.<\/p>\n
\u201cSorry, love. I wasn\u2019t thinking straight. I was just excited,\u201d<\/p>\n
he said. And he seemed so genuine, so I gave in. That was my first mistake.
\nIt was only supposed to be for a short while. But as the weeks stretched into months, our home slowly unraveled. Alex and Jake stayed up late gaming, guzzling beers, and treating the living room like a frat house. Snack wrappers, dirty laundry, and beer bottles became part of the decor. The next morning, I got up early\u2014before either of them stirred\u2014and gathered every bit of trash Alex had left behind: cans, food containers, dirty clothes. I dumped it all in Jake\u2019s precious home office. By the time he opened the door, the room looked like a landfill.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat the hell?!\u201d<\/p>\n
he yelled from the office.
\nI didn\u2019t answer. I didn\u2019t need to.<\/p>\n
Alex, clueless as ever, poked his head in.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhoa, bro. Your office is a mess!\u201d<\/p>\n
he laughed. Meanwhile, Jake shoved the trash aside just to get to his desk.
\nDays passed, and I let the mess grow\u2014socks, dishes, old takeout\u2014until finally, Jake snapped.<\/p>\n
\u201cI CAN\u2019T WORK LIKE THIS!\u201d<\/p>\n
he bellowed from his office.
\nI walked in, cool as ever.<\/p>\n

He had no comeback. Alex mumbled something about not realizing how bad it was. I suggested he pitch in. And for a while, things improved\u2014sort of. But soon enough, the mess started creeping back, along with my frustration.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I crash with you this weekend?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, hon. Come over,\u201d<\/p>\n
she said without hesitation.
\nStaying with Lisa felt like breathing again. No noise, no clutter, no stress. Just peace. By Monday, Jake finally called.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease come home,\u201d<\/p>\n
he pleaded.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe house is a disaster. I can\u2019t find anything. Alex is impossible to live with!\u201d<\/p>\n

I told him.
\nNot long after, a video arrived on my phone\u2014Jake and Alex, scrubbing and cleaning like their lives depended on it. I didn\u2019t respond. But later that day, I returned.<\/p>\n
The house was sparkling. Alex\u2019s bags were packed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThanks for the hospitality,\u201d<\/p>\n
he said sheepishly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll find another place to stay.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the door closed behind him, Jake wrapped his arms around me.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m so sorry, babe. I really messed up. I should\u2019ve listened to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
I nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just need us to be a team. You and me, not you and Alex.\u201d<\/p>\n
Things changed after that. Jake started helping around the house, and slowly, our home returned to what it once was: peaceful, clean, and ours.<\/p>\n
Now, when I walk past that extra bedroom\u2014the one Alex trashed\u2014I smile. It\u2019s quiet. Clean. Blissfully empty.<\/p>\n

Jake said one morning as he hugged me in the kitchen.
