I really thought I was being funny.<\/p>\n
It had been a rough week at work\u2014my boss was breathing down my neck, my rent had gone up, and I\u2019d just gotten ghosted by someone I actually liked. So by the time Friday rolled around, I was running on sarcasm, caffeine, and the kind of bitterness that makes you snort at other people\u2019s struggles instead of empathizing.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why, when I saw her at the grocery store, I didn\u2019t even think twice.<\/p>\n
She was slumped over the handle of a shopping cart, completely knocked out. Her hair was falling out of a messy bun, shirt stained with what looked like ketchup\u2014or maybe baby food. In the cart, two little kids, probably three or four years old, were curled up together, fast asleep among bags of frozen peas and cereal boxes like they were in a makeshift nest.<\/p>\n

I was about to make a scene when I heard a voice behind me. Calm, low, almost too steady.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou recognize me?\u201d<\/p>\n
I turned, confused. And then I froze.<\/p>\n
There she was. The woman from the grocery store. Hair still pulled back in a messy bun, scrubs instead of a stained T-shirt, but those same tired eyes. Only now they were looking straight through me.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo?\u201d she asked again. \u201cGrocery store? Cart? Two kids?\u201d<\/p>\n
I opened my mouth but nothing came out.<\/p>\n
She held a tablet in one hand, stylus in the other. \u201cYour wound isn\u2019t life-threatening. You\u2019ll be seen. Just not right this minute.\u201d She gestured to the waiting room with the tip of her pen and turned on her heel.<\/p>\n
\u201cWait,\u201d I said, finally finding my voice. \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n
She didn\u2019t turn back.<\/p>\n
I sat there, holding my hand to my chest, pain radiating up my arm. But the real ache was in my gut. That woman I mocked was here, walking the fluorescent-lit halls, probably running on two hours of sleep, and still saving lives\u2014including mine. And I\u2019d called her lazy.<\/p>\n
The doctor saw me about an hour later. I needed six stitches. It wasn\u2019t life-threatening, but it wasn\u2019t nothing either. I kept thinking about how, even hurt and panicked, I\u2019d had the privilege to demand help. Meanwhile, she didn\u2019t even get a moment to rest at the store without being mocked.<\/p>\n
When I got home, I took the post down. Then I wrote an apology. Not a notes-app kind of thing, but a real one. I didn\u2019t name her or share her photo, obviously\u2014but I described the moment and what I\u2019d learned. It felt\u2026 necessary. Like the least I could do.<\/p>\n
I expected some backlash, but to my surprise, a lot of people thanked me. Some even shared their own moments of thoughtlessness, and how they\u2019d grown. It didn\u2019t undo what I\u2019d done, but maybe it planted something better in its place.<\/p>\n
A few weeks passed.<\/p>\n
One morning, I stopped at a coffee shop near the hospital before work. I was waiting for my order when I heard someone behind me say, \u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n
I turned and saw her again.<\/p>\n
She looked different\u2014still tired, but less haunted. She held a coffee in one hand, her bag slung over her shoulder. \u201cI saw the post,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
I didn\u2019t know what to say, so I just nodded. \u201cI meant it.\u201d<\/p>\n
She studied me for a second, then gave a small smile. \u201cNext time, just ask if someone\u2019s okay. Most of us aren\u2019t. But we don\u2019t need to be ridiculed on top of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI will,\u201d I said. \u201cI promise.\u201d<\/p>\n
She nodded once and walked out. That was it.<\/p>\n
But something shifted after that.<\/p>\n
I started paying attention more. Not just online, but everywhere. I started asking people if they were okay. Sometimes they said yes, sometimes no. But it mattered that I asked.<\/p>\n
We live in a world where snapping a photo is easier than offering a hand. But I learned, painfully, that easy doesn\u2019t mean right.<\/p>\n
So yeah, I thought I was being funny. I thought I was just posting a joke. But it turns out, behind every \u201clazy\u201d moment is a story you probably don\u2019t know\u2014and sometimes, that story might just end up stitching you back together, piece by piece.<\/p>\n
