I reached for it, hands shaking.<\/p>\n
But Nate pulled it back. His eyes suddenly dark.<\/p>\n

Nate stared at me, like he was measuring my words against a lifetime of pain.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got a call three months ago,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cPrivate investigator. Said someone confessed to the murder on his deathbed. Said he knew you took the fall.\u201d<\/p>\n
I blinked. \u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I didn\u2019t know what to believe. I didn\u2019t want to believe I\u2019d been wrong about you my whole life.\u201d He swallowed hard. \u201cBut I was.\u201d<\/p>\n
He handed me the drawing. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, Dad. I should\u2019ve fought harder. I should\u2019ve asked more questions. But I was just a kid.\u201d<\/p>\n
I held the paper like it was made of glass. \u201cI don\u2019t blame you.\u201d<\/p>\n
The truth was, I\u2019d stopped blaming him years ago. Blame eats you from the inside. And I\u2019d already lost too much time.<\/p>\n
Liana ran up to me and tugged at my pant leg. \u201cGrandpa, can you read me a story?\u201d<\/p>\n
I looked at Nate for permission. He nodded.<\/p>\n
We found an old picture book on the shelf\u2014one the previous tenant must\u2019ve left behind. I read to her in a voice I didn\u2019t know I still had, and she curled up next to me like we\u2019d always known each other.<\/p>\n
When Nate stood to leave an hour later, Liana was asleep on the couch with her rabbit tucked under her chin.<\/p>\n

He smiled, and for a second, I saw a glimpse of the boy he used to be. \u201cShe gets that from her mom.\u201d<\/p>\n

I blinked. \u201cYou sure?\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at me, eyes steady. \u201cYeah. I\u2019m sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
As they walked down the porch steps, I watched them go with a strange fullness in my chest. Like I\u2019d just been given something I didn\u2019t realize I\u2019d been missing. Not just forgiveness. But a future.<\/p>\n
