We sent it as a group email, all signing our names at the bottom, with a note: \u201cPayment appreciated within 14 days.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vanessa did not take it well.<\/p>\n
A few hours later, I got a call.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you SERIOUS?!\u201d she shrieked before I could even say hello.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, you got our invoice?\u201d I said innocently.<\/p>\n

\u201cVanessa, we came to celebrate you. We gave you gifts. We spent money just to be there. You never said a word about charging us. That\u2019s not how weddings work.\u201d<\/p>\n
Silence. Then, finally: \u201cI just didn\u2019t think it was fair for me and Leo to pay for everything ourselves. Why should we have to cover it all?\u201d<\/p>\n
I sighed. \u201cBecause that\u2019s what hosting a wedding is. If you can\u2019t afford it, you adjust. You don\u2019t trick your friends into paying after the fact.\u201d<\/p>\n
She huffed. \u201cFine. Whatever. Forget the invoice. Just drop it, okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
And that was that. No apology, just her backing down once she realized she wasn\u2019t going to get the money.<\/p>\n
That was six months ago. I haven\u2019t spoken to Vanessa since. She stopped messaging most of us after the incident, and honestly? I\u2019m okay with that.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s the thing: friendship isn\u2019t transactional. You don\u2019t invite people to celebrate with you and then slap them with a bill. You don\u2019t put a price tag on relationships. Vanessa saw us as walking ATMs, and when that didn\u2019t work, she walked away.<\/p>\n
And in the end, that told me everything I needed to know about her.<\/p>\n
