\u201cI met your son yesterday at the grocery store,\u201d he added. \u201cI left my wallet in the car. Your boy witnessed my struggle. He purchased me food. No hesitation.\u201d<\/p>\n
I opened my mouth but said nothing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI asked why,\u201d he said. \u201cHe said, \u2018You resembled my grandfather. My mother insists we don\u2019t pass needy individuals.<\/p>\n
Malik entered the hall, wiping his eyes.<\/p>\n
Where did you get the cash? I requested.<\/p>\n
He looked down. Have been working. To make your birthday special.\u201d<\/p>\n
Burning tears.<\/p>\n
The man gave me a card. A name. A number.<\/p>\n
\u201cCall me,\u201d he said. In due time. I want to fund his schooling. Any school. Any dream.\u201d<\/p>\n
Right away, they departed. No cameras. No fanfare. Just quiet grace.<\/p>\n
Malik looked at me, uncertain. \u201cDid I mess up?\u201d<\/p>\n
I laughed through tears. \u201cNo, baby. You did everything right.\u201d<\/p>\n
He sank into my arms as he hadn\u2019t done in years. \u201cI thought it didn\u2019t matter. That I already damaged everything.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIt always mattered,\u201d I said. \u201cI was just waiting for you to believe it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two days later, school phoned. I anticipated more terrible news.<\/p>\n
Instead, Miss Daniels told me Malik\u2019s painting was on display. Perhaps you should see it.\u201d<\/p>\n
I arrived on time after leaving work early.<\/p>\n
His composition was \u201cIn Pieces, Still Whole.\u201d<\/p>\n
Broken portrait mosaic reconstructed with gold. Face broken but held together. Like kintsugi. He didn\u2019t know the word but recognized the reality.<\/p>\n
He stopped when he noticed me across the room. I grinned.<\/p>\n

Smiled back.<\/p>\n
My birthday. I wasn\u2019t hopeful.<\/p>\n
