High school graduation is a momentous occasion that we all look forward to. It represents a chapter in our lives that we will always treasure as a cherished memory, shared with those we care about the most.<\/p>\n

For Britt, a young woman graduating high school, the day was an emotional roller coaster. She felt immense pride in her achievement, but her heart was filled with anxiety over whether her mother and stepfather would show up. Amid the camera flashes and bustle, she desperately hoped to recognize familiar faces.<\/p>\n

As she sat among her classmates, Britt kept scanning the crowd. \u201cThey\u2019re probably running late,\u201d she reassured herself. \u201cOr maybe stuck in traffic. They\u2019ll be here any minute.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

With each name called, Britt\u2019s anticipation grew. Finally, when it was her turn to walk up to the stage, she forced a smile. Holding her diploma, she prayed to see her mom\u2019s smile and her stepdad\u2019s thumbs up. But they were nowhere to be seen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey must be here somewhere,\u201d she thought as she walked around the place. Once she realized they weren\u2019t there and they were probably not coming at all, Britt checked her phone. There was a message there which read, \u201cSorry, we couldn\u2019t make it. Something came up with your stepsister. We\u2019ll celebrate later. Congrats!\u201d<\/p>\n

Britt got incredibly concerned. She wondered what could have possibly been more important than her graduation and couldn\u2019t wait to get home and be there for her parents.<\/p>\n

Iris, her step-sister, was always throwing tantrums, and wanted to be the center of attention, but what could be wrong this time?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As she stood there all by herself, Britt felt a hand on her shoulder. It was Justin\u2019s, her prom date. \u201cHey, are you okay?\u201d he asked her, realizing something was terribly wrong.<\/p>\n

Britt couldn\u2019t answer because she felt a lump in her throat. Instead of words, tears started rolling down her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh sweetheart, come here,\u201d Justin\u2019s mom told her as she pulled her in her embrace. \u201cYou\u2019re not alone, we\u2019re here for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

They did all in their power not to let Britt feel alone and tried to fill in the void.<\/p>\n

Following the celebration with Justin\u2019s family, Britt headed home. Once there she saw her mom and step-dad on the couch, watching TV just like any other day. What\u2019s most, they even looked relaxed<\/p>\n

Britt\u2019s anger bubbled up. \u201cHey, where were you guys?\u201d she asked with a trembling voice. \u201cYou missed my graduation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mom, looking embarrassed, sighted, \u201cYour stepsister broke a nail. She threw a huge tantrum and demanded we take her to the beauty salon to get it fixed immediately. She was inconsolable, Britt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unable to look at her eyes, her mom said, \u201cBritt, we\u2019re sorry. We\u2019ll celebrate later, I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

After giving it some thought, Britt decided it would be for the best if she left the house for some time. So, she called Mrs. Anderson, Justin\u2019s mom. With a shaking voice she said, \u201cGood evening, Mrs. Anderson. I want to ask you for a favor. But I don\u2019t know how to\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGo on, Brittany. What is it?\u201d Mrs. Anderson replied with her sweet voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan I stay with you guys for a while? I\u2019ve had a fallout with my family and I need to get out of here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justin\u2019s mom didn\u2019t hesitate. \u201cOf course, sweetheart. You\u2019re always welcome here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Britt packed her things and headed towards the front door. \u201cI\u2019m leaving,\u201d she said. \u201cI need some time away from this house, from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mom tried to stop her, but it was too late.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the weeks that followed, Britt was able to find a job and eventually, an apartment. She ignored her parents\u2019 calls and didn\u2019t want any contact with them.<\/p>\n

However, years later, when she was about to graduate from college, Britt decided to give them a chance for redemption so she called them on the phone and invited them to her graduation ceremony. She believed they owed her to be there this time.<\/p>\n

Sadly, the history repeated itself. On the day of her college graduation, Britt\u2019s mom and step-dad didn\u2019t show up. The reason why? Iris, who was pregnant at the time, had a craving for a particular cake from a sweet shop in the next town and they got stuck in traffic. Just like the first time, they excused themselves with a lame text message.<\/p>\n

This was yet another blow from the people who were meant to be Britt\u2019s biggest support. Following the ceremony, Justin found Britt. \u201cThey didn\u2019t come, did they?\u201d he said softly. \u201cNo, they didn\u2019t,\u201d she answered.<\/p>\n

Justin was always there for her, he felt like the closest person she had in her life, and eventually they started a relationship and moved in together. Britt was happy with how her life turned out, but the ache of her parents\u2019 absence from her life was something she needed time to get over.<\/p>\n
