I took a deep breath, trying to calm the anger that was bubbling up inside of me. I didn\u2019t want to start shouting or get caught up in the whirlwind of emotions that were rushing through me. But it was hard. I felt disrespected, confused, and completely let down. He was my partner, my equal\u2014he wasn\u2019t supposed to make decisions like this, especially when it affected our family.<\/p>\n
\u201cMax, what the heck are you talking about?\u201d I said, trying to keep my voice steady.<\/p>\n
\u201cI left the kids at the center, went to the wedding, and now I can\u2019t find the gift anywhere. It\u2019s gone. It\u2019s like someone took it from the back seat. What\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMax, you took my car and my gift\u2014our gift\u2014to their wedding. I don\u2019t even know why you thought that was okay, but instead of handling things like an adult, you just disappeared, leaving the kids behind. Do you hear yourself right now? What is going on with you?\u201d<\/p>\n
There was silence on the other end of the line for a few moments. Max had always been the type to get defensive when he was cornered, and I expected that. But this time, something was different.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know what to say, I didn\u2019t think it was a big deal,\u201d he finally muttered.<\/p>\n
I could feel my frustration growing. \u201cA big deal? Max, you left the kids alone at an amusement park. They\u2019re too young to be by themselves there, and you didn\u2019t even let me know. I had no idea where you were, and you took off with our only car. You\u2019ve got some explaining to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t sure whether to believe him. Max had a way of smoothing things over, but his actions often told a different story.<\/p>\n
\u201cFine,\u201d I said reluctantly. \u201cBut you need to come home right now, and we need to talk about everything. I\u2019m serious, Max.\u201d<\/p>\n
We ended the call, and I tried to push aside the growing knot in my stomach. He wasn\u2019t the kind of person to lose his temper easily, but I could feel his discomfort over the situation. Maybe he did realize the weight of what he had done, but I wasn\u2019t going to let him sweep it under the rug.<\/p>\n
An hour later, Max arrived home. His face was pale, and there was a nervous energy in his steps.<\/p>\n

He sank onto the couch and ran a hand through his hair, a sign I\u2019d seen before when he was feeling guilty but unsure how to fix things. \u201cI didn\u2019t mean to leave the kids alone. I thought they\u2019d be fine at the center. But I shouldn\u2019t have taken your car. I shouldn\u2019t have done any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n
I watched him closely, trying to read his expression. I wanted to believe him. But his actions had hurt me, and I wasn\u2019t ready to just forgive him without understanding why it happened.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy?\u201d I asked simply. \u201cWhy did you go to the wedding alone? What was so important about it that you thought leaving our family behind was okay?\u201d<\/p>\n
Max shifted uncomfortably on the couch, avoiding my gaze. \u201cThe truth is, I\u2019ve been feeling\u2026 I don\u2019t know. Left out, maybe? Like, you\u2019re always so focused on the kids, and I don\u2019t get the attention anymore. I felt like if I went to that wedding, it would give me a chance to just\u2026 breathe. To feel like myself again. I miss being a part of something.\u201d<\/p>\n
I was taken aback. This was the first time Max had ever opened up to me about feeling neglected. Sure, we\u2019d been busy with the kids and work, but I didn\u2019t realize it was affecting him this much.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t know you felt like that,\u201d I said quietly, my anger melting into confusion. \u201cBut Max, you can\u2019t just leave the kids behind and take off to a wedding because you feel left out. That\u2019s not how it works. We\u2019re a team. We have to communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI know, I know,\u201d he said quickly. \u201cI\u2019ve been selfish. And I\u2019ll make it right, I promise.\u201d<\/p>\n
There was a pause before I spoke again. \u201cYou didn\u2019t even think to talk to me about how you were feeling? I could\u2019ve helped you, Max. We could\u2019ve found a way to work through it.\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked at me, eyes wide with regret. \u201cI thought you\u2019d be mad. I didn\u2019t know how to bring it up without sounding ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n
I softened a little. \u201cIt\u2019s not ridiculous to need attention, Max. But we have to work together. I want to be there for you, but you can\u2019t just make decisions like this on your own. It affects all of us.\u201d<\/p>\n
He nodded slowly. \u201cYou\u2019re right. And I want to make it up to you. To the kids, too. I\u2019ll make sure I never put us in a situation like this again.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI hope so,\u201d I replied, my voice softening. \u201cWe need to talk more. We need to figure out how to balance everything\u2014because you\u2019re not alone in this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Max looked at me, gratitude in his eyes. \u201cI\u2019ll do better. I swear.\u201d<\/p>\n
The next few weeks were tough. Max worked hard to show me that he could be the partner I needed. We went to counseling, and he made more of an effort to talk about his feelings instead of bottling them up. It wasn\u2019t easy, but little by little, things started to improve.<\/p>\n
We never stopped being busy, but we started to carve out time for each other, even if it was just a few minutes each day. And while we didn\u2019t have everything figured out, we learned the most important thing: that we couldn\u2019t take our family or our relationship for granted. We had to keep working at it, no matter how busy life got.<\/p>\n
