One slow Tuesday afternoon, I was in the break room, unwrapping a turkey sandwich I\u2019d made that morning. It was nothing fancy\u2014just some deli meat, mustard, and wheat bread. I took a bite, scrolling through my phone, when Greg stormed in, gripping a crumpled receipt like it was a smoking gun.<\/p>\n

I stood up, grabbing my sandwich. \u201cAlright, Greg. Let\u2019s go watch that footage together.\u201d<\/p>\n
His smirk faltered. \u201cThat\u2019s not necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, but it is,\u201d I pressed. \u201cBecause I know for a fact I didn\u2019t take anything, and I\u2019d love to see what this so-called proof looks like.\u201d<\/p>\n
A tense silence stretched between us. Greg shifted on his feet, eyes darting toward the door. He was bluffing, and now he knew that I knew.<\/p>\n
\u201cLook,\u201d he said, his voice softer now, like we were negotiating. \u201cLet\u2019s not make this a big deal. Just take the termination and go.\u201d<\/p>\n
I smiled\u2014an actual, genuine smile. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then I walked straight past him and out into the caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n
The lunch rush had just started, and a handful of customers were waiting for their orders. My coworkers\u2014Emily, Jake, and Ryan\u2014were scrambling behind the counter. The second I stepped out, Emily gave me a questioning look.<\/p>\n
Greg was right on my heels, his voice low. \u201cDon\u2019t do this.\u201d<\/p>\n
I ignored him. \u201cHey, guys,\u201d I called out. My coworkers looked up. \u201cApparently, I\u2019m getting fired today.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily frowned. \u201cWait, what?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cFor stealing a sandwich,\u201d I said, holding up my sad little turkey sandwich like Exhibit A.<\/p>\n
Jake snorted. \u201cYou bring your lunch every day.\u201d<\/p>\n
Greg let out a nervous chuckle. \u201cGuys, let\u2019s not\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
I cut him off. \u201cAnd I just think it\u2019s funny because I\u2019m getting fired the same week the owner\u2019s niece starts working here. Weird coincidence, huh?\u201d<\/p>\n
A hush fell over the caf\u00e9. Even the customers were listening now. Greg\u2019s face turned redder by the second. \u201cThat has nothing to do with this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ryan folded his arms. \u201cReally? Because it sure looks like you\u2019re making up a reason to fire her.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily turned to Greg. \u201cCan we see the footage?\u201d<\/p>\n
Greg\u2019s mouth opened and closed. Then, without another word, he turned on his heel and stormed back into the office. A few seconds later, the door slammed.<\/p>\n
Silence. Then one of the customers\u2014a regular named Mrs. Patel\u2014shook her head. \u201cDisgusting. I won\u2019t be coming here anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another customer, a guy in a suit, nodded. \u201cSame. This is shady as hell.\u201d<\/p>\n
I hadn\u2019t expected that, but I wasn\u2019t going to argue. I turned back to my coworkers. \u201cLook, I don\u2019t want to get you guys in trouble. I just thought you should know.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily put a hand on my shoulder. \u201cWe appreciate it. And honestly? If Greg\u2019s pulling crap like this, I don\u2019t want to work here either.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jake pulled off his apron. \u201cYeah, screw this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ryan did the same. Within minutes, all three of them were untying their aprons and tossing them on the counter. Greg was still holed up in his office, and none of us cared enough to wait around for him to come back.<\/p>\n
As we stepped outside, the late afternoon sun felt warmer than usual. I exhaled, letting go of the tension in my shoulders.<\/p>\n
\u201cWell,\u201d I said, biting into my sandwich. \u201cAnyone up for finding new jobs together?\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily laughed. \u201cAs long as we don\u2019t end up somewhere with another Greg.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jake grinned. \u201cAgreed.\u201d<\/p>\n
But our search didn\u2019t last long. One customer filmed the whole thing and it went viral. The owner saw the video and, let\u2019s just say it wasn\u2019t his cup of tea. By next morning, Greg and his little niece were fired, and our brave group was back in business.<\/p>\n
Some battles aren\u2019t worth fighting. But this one? That was absolutely worth it.<\/p>\n
