At the time, it felt like a lifeline tossed into rough waters. Something to hold onto.<\/p>\n
I became her guardian, along with her grandparents. We shared the responsibility, but I tried to be the one stable, father-like figure in her life. By the time she was 21, she had three kids and no degree. Tyler bounced from one odd job to another. They weren\u2019t married\u2014didn\u2019t seem like it mattered to them. I never pried. People live their lives. I stayed in my lane, continued to help where I could.<\/p>\n

She showed me two photos. One dress was $7,500. The other was just under $5,000. I nearly dropped my coffee.<\/p>\n
\u201cMegan,\u201d I said slowly, \u201cI wasn\u2019t thinking five figures when I made that promise. That\u2019s\u2026 a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut you promised,\u201d she said, her smile fading.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did. And I meant it. But I can\u2019t afford something like that. How about $1,500? We\u2019ll go shopping together. We can find something beautiful\u2014just not that expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked at Tyler, who didn\u2019t say a word. Her face tightened, lips pressed together.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut this is my wedding. I want it to be special.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it will be. But a dress doesn\u2019t have to cost a fortune to be special.\u201d<\/p>\n
The conversation ended with a forced smile and a lot of quiet. I thought we\u2019d reached a compromise.<\/p>\n
I was wrong.<\/p>\n
A few days later, I was working in the garage when I heard Megan talking on the phone just outside. She must\u2019ve thought I wasn\u2019t home.<\/p>\n
\u201cUncle Tim\u2019s going to give us the money,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ll tell him it\u2019s for the dress, but we\u2019ll sell it afterward and use the cash for the wedding\u2014and your car repairs.\u201d<\/p>\n
I froze, the wrench in my hand suddenly heavy.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe doesn\u2019t know I already spent the trust fund on the last repairs,\u201d she added. \u201cIt\u2019ll be easy. Trust me.\u201d<\/p>\n
That was it. The girl I raised, the one I protected, loved like my own\u2014was planning to con me. She\u2019d already burned through the money her parents left her and now wanted to exploit the one promise I\u2019d held onto for years.<\/p>\n
She came inside like nothing happened.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to talk,\u201d I said, not bothering to hide the weight in my voice.<\/p>\n
She turned, confused. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI heard you talking to Tyler,\u201d I said. \u201cAbout the dress. About the trust fund.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her face drained of color. \u201cUncle Tim, I can explain\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo,\u201d I cut in. \u201cYou were going to lie to me. Take the money, sell the dress, and use it for something else. And you didn\u2019t even tell me the trust was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked away. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t have understood.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI would\u2019ve tried. But now? Now I just feel used.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry,\u201d she mumbled.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not paying for the dress,\u201d I said. \u201cAnd I\u2019m not helping with the wedding. Not after this.\u201d<\/p>\n
She left without another word. No apology. No anger. Just silence.<\/p>\n
Weeks passed. I found out through family that they ended up going to the courthouse after all. No ceremony. No dress. Just two signatures and some paperwork.<\/p>\n
I wasn\u2019t invited.<\/p>\n
And as much as I told myself I was fine with it, I wasn\u2019t. Not really.<\/p>\n
I still love her. That doesn\u2019t go away. But love without trust? That\u2019s just pain waiting to happen. I don\u2019t regret stepping in after her parents died. I don\u2019t regret raising her. I regret what she became\u2014and that maybe I didn\u2019t see it coming sooner.<\/p>\n
